Re: Which VOIP provider would be closest substitute for CV? How about Google Voice?!? You get a free DID in most area codes. You add ur cell to the list of forwarding phones. Call ur GV no. to check voicemail, press *2(or something similar) to make free calls within the US with ur GV no. as caller ID. Can always add credit for int. calls. Create a 2nd GV account for the alt. line, set it up with Gizmo5 or IPKall-Callcentric for you softphone and GV#2 to GV#1's forwarding phone list to get simultaneous ringing.
Looks like Google is now offering free sets of cards with ur GV no. and other details on it. |

 | reply to nitzan said by nitzan:Out of curiosity- how much of a demand is there for this feature? (call in, then call out presenting your number) Does it matter where the call-in number is - or anywhere in the country is good? It's possible, just wondering if it makes sense to invest the time in developing. The ability of calling in and calling out is only (my opinion) critical for individuals that might want to make international (long distance) calls via their VOIP provider and not their Cell phone company. This might also be true when one is staying at a hotel maybe? Also, if the indiuvidual has "unlimited" flat rate calling plan with the VOIP provider and they have a MyFavs, et. al., they could technically make free cell phone calls monthly via their VOSP.
However, as Waterloo stated above, with Google Voice I can pretty much do (& I do) that now (Caller ID and all!!), making such a demand minimal at this stage. The problem is, GV's international calling rates are not as competitive as say...F9's? |

| reply to Art_B I was trying to see if U-Verse was available in your town (Sunnyvale) and I saw this complaint just posted a few days ago by a California customer:

Art_B join:2008-11-25 Sunnyvale, CA | Thanks much for the comments about Google Voice and u-verse.
Doing a quick scan of the Google Voice info, appears they do not yet let you port your existing number. But do plan to start offering that feature. Overall the product sounds similar in features to CallVantage. I could be interested in this once they allow number porting.
I find u-verse a bit frustrating. Offer a great set of features. But you must use them as your ISP. And they are not compatible with TiVo. I prefer a solution such as CallVantage or Google Voice where my choice of phone provider is not locked into my ISP choice.
As I look more at Vonage, they seem to have completely dropped the ball on offering a call out from voice mail feature. In addition to lacking the ability to do a dial out from their voice mail system., they also apparently do not offer the ability to remotely access voice mail, then choose an option to respond to caller using the person's caller ID info. |

 | reply to limejet I went to CallCentric from CV. It seemed to have most of the features, but not all. I liked having the Softphone feature included, but I don't believe they have Control By Phone which I miss. You'll have to buy a phone adapter from a third party, and I wish CC had some arrangement. I bought one on eBay, a PAP2, which I unlocked, but there are several gotcha's for the PAP2, so unless you want to dig into unlocking the PAP2, I recommend just getting a Grandstream. Overall the services are very good and I'm satisfied. |
