[Info] Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2 Released

Windows Vista Service Pack 2's Latest Release Schedule

...

We have news of the upcoming Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista! Microsoft is doing their best to rush out Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista so there will be additional incentive for folks to upgrade to Window Vista now, instead of waiting for Windows 7.

Incidentally, this service pack also applies to Windows Server 2008. It upgrades Windows Server 2008 to Release 2. You can get more information on Windows Server 2008 R2 in the links below

...

Update @ May 24, 2009 : We updated the editorial and the release schedule with the confirmed RTM and RTW dates and details.
...

Updated! Latest Release Schedule

Microsoft has finalized Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The final build has a version string of 6.0.6002.18.005, and has been released to manufacturing (RTM).

As always, do remember that when Microsoft announces that a product is RTM, it doesn't mean you will be able to download it right away. RTM merely means it is "released to manufacturing", including OEMs. Actual public release or Release to web (RTW) will occur about a month after RTM..

Yes that is quite amusing, where did you find the statement? It sure sounds like something MS would issue.

No, Server 2008 and Vista use the same service pack. It will be this way going forward.

If you're worried about the large download size, you could always wait until it is distributed through Microsoft Update. The download size should be dynamic at that point and it will only download the specific components you need. (Unless this behavior has been changed from XP to Vista?)

Re: [Info] Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2 Released

Download size doesn't bother me. Starting with Windows XP, and now Vista, I have always downloaded the Service packs manually and didn't wait for Windows update.

Thanks.

It only took about ~7 min to download the 348.3 MB X86 SP2 file. Not too bad.

FWIW, SP2 was offered to me as an update this morning. 337.9MB - 343.9MB, not that much difference in size to the standalone version.

If you sit down and watch the 'downloading' process via WU you'll notice it isn't actually downloading very much even though it says it's downloading around 350MB. Mine appeared to downloading only in the realm of 100MB or so, and spent the rest of the time just verifying that the prior updates were in place.

You know, curiosity killed the cat.

Seriously, it's been working fine on my laptop for a few days and several other forum members have reported no trouble over several weeks of usage.

Re: [Info] Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2 Released

I was one of the first to install it (a full Vista with SP2 install), and after 3 weeks or so, it's running like a top with not a single issue so far... I'd rercommend that all Vista users grab this and install ASAP.
Everything seems "snappier" too, although that may just be my imagination.

Howie,

I'm thinking of installing SP2 through WU tonight. Can you tell if it auto installs IE8 or can I still keep IE7 on my system? I would prefer not "upgrading" to IE8 at this time.

TIA!

Thanks for the info, Cudni!
I have IE8 on Vista SP2. Installed SP2 first, then installed IE8 and both work fine on the Dell Inspiron laptop. IE8 is not included in SP2, though, just updates to Vista's IE7.

So far only the 5 language standalone downloads of SP2 are available to the public at the Microsoft Download Center. The links to the "all language" standalone SP2 downloads are broken because Microsoft has not yet posted the "all language" standalone downloads of SP2. Those I think will be available sometime in June.

Haha yep I usually just install Service packs for security and general bug fixes right away. I was just being extra cautious because its going on my travel laptop and it will be my main computer for the summer.

Anyway no problems on install and no problems with anything else so far...

This fix is for SP1 WU install errors, but may very well apply to you as well.

So which is the better install........Windows update, or the stand alone?? Does it even matter? I have it being offered up at WU.

Hmm, I am just curious.

Would it be okay for me to install this SP2 five-languages version when I currently have the all-36-languages version of SP1 installed? I am afraid I might run into issues.

Is anybody else having the problem with the popup saying Avira is not compatible with SP2.

I am still running Version 8.3 and haven't as yet upgraded to Version 9.0. Would the update to 9 rectify this problem?

I had looked at that post and downloaded version 9.0 and was waiting for some more info.

Probably will go ahead and install 9. They had some issues with 9 and I was being sure these were taken care of first.
