| Assistance Needed & Throttling Question
Hello everyone,
I have been experiencing a dramamtic reduction in download speeds within peer 2 peer software applications such as BitTorrent and DC++. This has been going on for approx. 2-3 monthes and seemingly occurred out of nowhere.
When I download directly from the web, I still acheive speeds as high as 600-800 kps, but using p2p my max DL speed is now 30 kps - regardless of application or which user I connect to. If I have two connections running they are split (i.e. one at 20 kps and one at 10). I'm not sure what occurred to change my speeds - I have not changed routers or computer...I have not changed any settings. I was wondering what can/may cause this problem or if I am being throttled.
I have been a mountain cable broadband customer for as long as it has been offered at two different addresses and never had any serious issues until recently. Can someone tell me what I can check for...or if anyone else is experiencing this?
Please feel free to ask me any additional questions...
Thanks for reading,

| Try changing your ports around. I had this issue a long time ago as well and I shuffled my ports. Also make sure you still have the same IP on your network, sometimes I find my main downloading PC can sometimes get bumped to a different IP and I need to change my port forwarding settings to match the new IP. |

| reply to mdell72 I have been having the exact same problem... except it has been with the news server... I was previously able to download in excess of 700-800 k/sec... all the time, no problems... Now it seems to have been capped to 50k/sec... I dont know whats going on here. It would appear as if mountain cable is trying to stop people from downloading in specific areas.... |

| Beefy,
I haven't been on the newsgroups in a long time, but I checked mine out snd they are slooooooow.
There must be something up...I call tech suppory but they weren't able to offer me much help. I hope someone out there can advise us where to start looking for a solution. |

| reply to mdell72 I just came to visit my uncle who is on mountain cable, and his torrent downloads are deplorable. When I was here last year, they were about on par for cable internet.
Seems like all Canadian cable ISP have turned into a bunch of knobs over the last year. Hopefully the CRTC puts them back in their place. No choice or competition sucks. |

1 edit | You want a solution, do what I'm going to do, cut mountaincable off from your money. In the end its your dollars that speak more volumes than any phone call. I'm going to be switching to Teksavvy DSL. Anything's gotta be better than being throttled to 2mbit connection every evening for all forms of traffic, not just p2p.
Oh yeah thats SO 7mbit right there.

| Hi,
Yes, that's about the same boat I'm in - I'm a cable/internet/phone bundle customer who is fed up with these speed issues. Actually, I wouldn't mind as much if they would at least acknowledge it, but they they continue to tell me that the problem is on my end, and that "other customers" are not experiencing the same restrictions. Clearly, this isn't true. I've read elsewhere about people experiencing a speed increase in the evenings, but that doesn't occur for me. All P2P downloads (torrents, or direct shares like DC++) are capped at 30/Kps (total - so two DL's would be 22 & 8 or 15 & 15)
You can see from my report the results I'm getting do not reflect 7 MBit.
Can some other user post their results? Maybe I'm just on a bad line.
Thanks |

| Well after a bit of discussions with Mountaincable they finally figured out what the problem was. They saw my connection speeds of 1mbit and did a bit of checking up on things, and discovered that the node I was connected to was defective. So they got their stuff together and fixed it less than a week later and since they fixed the node, I've been getting this speed constant no matter the time of day. It's nice to have working internet again I must say.
