[ARIZONA] Moving to AZ for an internship... Petrified of Spiders

Got a friend who's moving to Flagstaff for an internship for the summer and she's petrified .. mortified of spiders.

Any encouraging news I can give her about this?

Well they dont seem to fond of us either and typically hide from us . Maybe that will make your friend feel better.

because the temperature changes in flagstaff between the winter and summer months, the spiders don't have a chance to get very big?

just kidding. i grew up in a locale similar to flagstaff and spiders weren't too much of an issue. as long as you don't go digging in dark, damp spaces you won't have to deal with black widows. other than that, you might see an errant wolf-spider on the wall, but nothing major.

i would assume that the spiders are worse in georgia, no?

Yes, they squish really easily with a big tromp of a shoe! But seriously, I live down in Phoenix and have yet to see anything worse than I saw back in IL. Tell her to chill and enjoy Flag!

It's not the spiders she needs to worry about. It's the scorpions and rattlesnakes that get you.

Like one of the others said, the freezes up in Flag keep the populations down moreso than down here in the valley.

I live not too far from Flagstaff and have spent a lot of time there. I also spent 3 of my childhood summers in Macon Ga. I can tell you that the insects, arachnids, and snakes are nil in comparison with Ga. She will be fine. There is the occasional house spider or the scary Wolf spider but I highly doubt she will see a large Wolf spider in downtown Flagpole. That's a high traffic area. I've only seen 1 Bark scorpion and 2 Timber rattlers on this mountain in 30 years so that should be a non issue as well.

That's good. She's a little less concerned about it now. Thanks everyone!

Have her go to this site until her fear diminishes.
