[Skype] Changed Rates

Skype has changed there rates from last year. Is there a cheaper option now? I know people that use the MagicJack but are very upset, and most Voip phones are expensive. Any help is appreciated

Are you referring to the phone itself (hardware) or to Voip phone services (such as those here »/gbu/)

To use Voip you don't need a Voip phone. You can use a regular phone with an adapter (value priced ones include Grandstream Handytone 286 or Linksys/Sipura (Cisco) "PAP2T-NA". There are other ways to do it as well.

If you are not already familiar with true consumer Voip (as different from Skype or MJ!) take a look at the top few companies on that list.

PS: Do NOT buy a phone adapter on eBay. Counterfeits and malfers abound.

I bought a new PAP2T-NA from Amazon for 50 bucks (free shipping) and I am extremely pleased with it.

If you are like most Skype users and like to use a soft phone on your computer, you can download free soft phones from several vendors.

You might want to start looking at the plans offered by various VoIP providers. There are a ton out there, but the list on this page is a good start if you live in North America:

If you are looking just for cheaper than Skype service and you are in N. America, I doubt you find any. I do not use Skype now for calls to landlines for various reasons, but the unlimited N. America plan they have is the least expensive if one makes lots of calls. Occasional calls of up to 200 minutes/month may be comparable to the Skype plan.

(I did have that plan when it was first introduced - half price, around $15. I made a good use of it, especially when I was overseas and I had to make everyday calls back to Canada. Free calls from Europe to Canada through VPN! Unforgettable!)
