Static IP price increase on June 12?

Anyone else who has a static IP see this in their recent Embarq statement and why would they be doing this just before the merger?

BTW, I've never heard it called "Earthlink Static IP" before, so this is strange.....

I just shuffled my services around last week and they didn't say anything about my static IP going up to $9.95. Are there any Earthlink customers still on Embarq?

Not heard anything about it yet. Hopefully they won't increase the price on it..

Maybe Joey at Embarq can enlighten us.

I've had a static IP for 2 years now. I've never heard or seen it referred to as Earthlink static IP before. AFAIK, just the Embarq email service was provided by Earthlink for several years, but even that relationship has ended for some time now.

I haven't heard anything about a price increase nor read about it anywhere except on this forum. I'd wait to hear Embarq_Joey 's response

Hopefully that $25 static IP price for CenturyTel is gone (the review was done over 3 years ago.) Anyway, if Embarq does raise the price of a static IP, I more than likely will be switching.

If nobody hears anything by tomorrow night I'll call in and see what this is about.

I know IP pools are getting harder and harder to justify with ARIN and more expensive to get new ones. This may be an effort to force those with statics to rethink their decision and use a dynamic DNS service instead.

Agreed. There is very little you can't do with a dynamic DNS service that you could do with a static IP address (legitimately, anyways).

No change on my bill - Static IP $4.95 per month
(this is with 3M down / 640K up DSL in NC in the Wake Forest area)
Edit
Didn't anything about it online.

Got home - that same statement about static IP doubling is there on the paperbill. Time to call Embarq tomorrow morning....

I have not received a message regarding this myself. I have a static IP address as well - will be monitoring my bill coming up this month for if there are any changes.

I have seen the notice on my bill. It's not a change yet. If your bill is laid out the same as mine the warning is on page 5 of 5 under the heading EMBARQ Important Information and News You Can Use section. Talks about the Earthlink Static IP. My text in this section reads just like tritch posted.

So it does look like we're getting an additional charge.

Man how to create work and expose themselves to support costs. Reasonable increases or incentives to give them up make more sense.

Still waiting my bill to see what happens here on a business account.

Wow....so it is true! A 100% price increase is too much for me to stomach. I will have to cancel the static IP and start using a dynamic DNS service.

Completely agree with this part.

I'm not sure I follow this though. With either static or dynamic addressing I'm still consuming an IP address.

I understand charging a fee for static addressing, but $10 is a bit much. For $10 Comcast routes me a whole /28 (16 IPs) on my business connection.

I'll wager the underlying charge for your Comcast business line is far more than $39 per month.

Comcast business accounts start at $69.95 for the 8/2 offering, but that's not really the point.

The only reason to bump the static IP fee is to bolster revenue -- not that there is anything overtly wrong with that. I do find it puzzling that Embarq would drop the price on their 10mbps service, which has greater cost implications in terms of provisioning and infrastructure fees, while jacking up the price on static IPs.

Unless the motivation is try to remove support of static IPs by incrementally bumping to cost to deter people from requesting statics?

That is really the point. You pay almost twice what the mid-priced Embarq tier costs so naturally Comcast is less likely to try to make their profits on ups and extras (as Earl Schieb used to say) like static IP addresses.
