| reply to joako Re: Static IP price increase on June 12?
said by joako :said by RadioDoc :That is really the point. You pay almost twice what the mid-priced Embarq tier costs so naturally Comcast is less likely to try to make their profits on ups and extras (as Earl Schieb used to say) like static IP addresses. What does it matter? IP addresses are free, worst case they cost Embarq pennies a year in administrative costs and ARIN membership fees. there's a limited supply for IP addresses with IPv4, and the demand is still growing, so they're far from "free", as they have a natural market value on their own. |

| reply to tritch Residential price increase on static IPs all the way to $9.99. You guys still have probably the cheapest static IP service any where.
I've had internet service through 6 companies and I was never able to get a static IP for $9.99. Most companies out there won't even talk to you about getting a static IP unless you purchase a heck of an expensive business plan.
One company, Charter, was the one that first made me think of a DynDNS account. But then I found out that they block the hell out of their ports. So that was near useless and too expensive. But on that score it was 6 years ago. So it could be different now.
And in the area I've had services, south eastern MN, western WI, the cheapest option I've had was Centurytel for $20 residential. It is either that or get a business account. And if I get a business account for the internet, they will require a business phone for the internet as well. They don't do PBB on business yet.
So to all of you that are complaining about not getting any 'more' services, you should look around for static IP options. I think you will find that when you did have it for $4.99, Embarq-Earthlink was GIVING it to you. And for nearly $10, they are still being extremely kind. |

1 edit | reply to tritch FWIW - my DHCP IP address hasn't changed since we first come online with it. Of course, my DSL modem and router haven't been off since then either.... So in conjunction with the dyndns , it works well enough. And yes - I'm one of the Embarq monitors... |

| reply to mdaddyrabbit said by mdaddyrabbit :Got my Bill today and my static went from 4.95 to 9.95 why? If they are going to raise prices then I want more service? Everything keeps going up but salaries. I'm not exactly sure how you're going to get more "service" from a static IP address...maybe they could send you a nice shiny certificate in a frame that shows your IP address.
It is naive to think that broadband prices will stay the same (or anything else for that matter). |

Yeah, I know. I've been a customer longer than you've been at this site. There was some speculation about the new boys implementing it in their new playground. Some things aren't as they seem radio
Also, DHCP is here to stay - No looking back at PPPoE |

We have 8 static IPs at our 5Mb business account.
The last bill for May 16th shows we pay $20/ month extra for the 8 static ips.
I did not see any notice in the bill regarding a billing change.
Do you think this will change? |

The link shows a static IP is included with 3 Mb and above.

| reply to Tarheels Fan said by Tarheels Fan :Ah ok, well with dynamics assigned to MAC addresses and not dropped but every 15min - 60min - then it would be the same thing.... Radiodoc should see about getting his line fixed permanently. Good luck with that. The line has been up for 4-1/2 years and they still haven't figured out what is wrong...after three tries. The only "solution" was to drop the sync rate. The line is 12,500+ feet long.
The static IP address means once the modem retrains things go merrily along as if nothing happened. If they implement PPPoE that makes it completely unusable. Completely. I've been through that BS on my AT&T lines. |
