Re: Why the price difference - 2 laptops

We actually have both of these. All in all the Samsung just runs and looks better. With the Acer, if you shut the lid and then an hour later open it up the wireless sometimes won't connect. The Samsung will connect back flawlessly every time. The Acer also has an issue of the disappearing battery meter in the task bar. I have Googled everything and ended up running a script to replace the battery icon.

IMHO, the battery is a big difference, and the 1.3" screen difference is actually somewhat significant at that small size, much more so than a 14.1" screen vs. 15.4" screen for example.

The keyboard layout is nicer than on the Acer.

Also, Samsung will generally be a bit pricier than Acer...

However, they are both good netbooks, and I think that the Acer is really quite decent, especially at the price.

The other big difference is the keyboard.

The keyboard on the Acer, like most 9" units, is too small in my opinion for any kind of serious typing. The touchpad buttons are also laid out on the sides instead of below the pad area. On the other hand, the Samsung NC10 has one of the best netbook keyboards in terms of size and tactile feedback.

If you're interested in the 10" units, also look at the 1000HE and 1008HA from Asus. Those two are serious competitors in the 10" category.

Wow I fell into that trap. I didn't even realize they were only an inch different. I saw 8" and 10" and thought they were 2" different. It's just like people selling things for 999.99 and they market it as "under a thousand dollars". No one sees the 99 cents on it so it might as well be a thousand dollars.

In any case yeah between screen size and battery differences I could see the price difference. But yeah it really depends on the technology driving the LCD. If either one of them is using LED instead of fluorescent then that could easily account for the difference, even at 1". That's the way new technology is, even if both are using LED. Given they are netbooks I'd suspect they are since LED's use little to no power and low power usage is a highly touted trait of a netbook.

8.9" WSVGA Acer CrystalBrite™ TFT LCD (1024 x 600)
vs
10.2" Wide SuperBright® WSVGA 1024 x 600 (220 nit)

is a difference; though really, the samsung isnt in stock so what might be happening is they are bartering on you comparing them.

Saying, hey this acer is really cheap... i should buy it now.
hmm it was in stock earlier today maybe my post influenced a flux of buyers

Did you miss the screen size difference? That'd be my guess, plus the battery difference you spotted. LCD screens aren't cheap, especially if they are using LED backlighting.
sorry right that's the one and main difference but I thought it was insignificant - 1 inch - about 10% - c'mon...

but you are right

I guess those add up

VS

Samsung NC10-14GB Netbook 160GB, 10.2" LCD - Blue
$416.00
»www.samsclub.com/shopping/naviga···m=425535

What do you think?

they seems to have very similar characteristics - both:

# Intel Atom Processor N270
# 1 GB DDR2
# 160GB SATA 5400RPM Hard Drive

I see main difference to be the battery:
6-cell Lithium Ion, 5200 mAh (HP)
vs
3-cell Li-ion 2200 mAh (Acer)

one can expect the other to last at least 2x longer - being 5200 mAh vs 2200 mAh

What do you think?

Thank you...
