"It wasn't until Verizon filed a program access complaint with the commission that Cablevision, the company's main competitor in the New York City market, began to sell, as required by law, access to its regional sports channels, MSG and MSG Plus. Today, Cablevision still refuses to supply that programming in high-definition format."

 | Good! Every once and awhile Comcast will put the Phillies on CN8 in Philly not their Sportsnet channel. FIOS only gets sportsnet so we don't get the game. HATE THAT! -- People who don't get good service on average tell 10 others while people who do get good service on average tell 1. |

I don't believe Comcast prevents Verizon from carrying the channel. From what I understand Verizon just chooses not to carry the channel. |

| reply to nascar I rewrote a portion of the the press release... quote: WASHINGTON - Armed with a new federal court ruling that further strengthens the legal basis for action, Verizon's Competition is calling on the Federal Communications Commission to act promptly to stop incumbent Verizon from illegally denying competitive telecommunication services across"must have" FiOS networks.
In a filing with the FCC on Thursday (May 28), Verizon's Competition told the commission that "telecommunications incumbents' documented history of abusing their control of FiOS networks and other telecommunications service to deny consumers a meaningful competitive choice is a real and ongoing problem that must be addressed."
That history includes withholding what the FCC calls "must have" broadband and video services in markets across the nation where many consumers want to be able to choose a new telecommunications provider or ISP and continue to watch their TV or surf the web.
"By denying competing telecommunication providers and ISP access to FiOS, Verizon deny many consumers a meaningful choice in telecommunication services," Verizon's Competition said in its FCC filing. "Without access to high speed fiber, many customers simply will not consider a competing provider's services."
Kinda funny how when you change a few words around, it still makes sense to the lay person, but from a business sense, Verizon is totally oppose to it. Why should Verizon have to help the competition? If it's really about the customer choice as they claim against MSG...they would do it.
Also, has the FCC terrestrial loophole changed recently? At one time RSN had to make their programming available to the competition if the signals were transmitted via satellite. If they were transmitted by fiber or a dedicated link, and not OTA, they did not have to be shared with others. Comcast SportsNet Philly successfully used this to block DirecTV from carrying the channel in the late 90s.
Also, is there any specific law or ruling that states that HD programming must also be shared if the SD is provided? |

Cablevision even has the balls to create commercials in the NY area saying that they are the only one that a person can see all NY sports teams in HD.
What's the time table for an FCC ruling on this?
Cablevision has chosen to pick and choose who gets MSG-HD access, and who doesn't. They have specifically singled out Verizon as not allowing them access to it.
How can the FCC justify one company (Cablevision), the authority to own a sports team, the building they play in, the channel they are broadcast on, and the system the channel is carried on. Utter monpoly. |

 | This action is years overdue. Verizon has likely lost me as a video customer to DirecTV permanently because of this.
More than seeing VZ win, I look forward to seeing the Dolans lose. |

 | I still think they should have taken them on.
In the '50s the movie studios were forced to sell the theaters they owned to increase competition...in the '70s ATT was forced to break up the company to increase competition.
What the Dolans are doing here is virtually the same thing. Controlling the entire channel (no pun intended)...teams, building, programming, distribution.
Better late than never, at least for those who've stuck it out. Like I said, it's not going to affect me, one way or the other. |

 | reply to nascar what is the timetable on something like this....anyone know>? |
|
1 edit | reply to nascar Well, it's about time! I guess Verizon was waiting for the change in administrations at the FCC? I hope this works soon, though MSG HD really isn't needed until the fall when NBA/NHL seasons start.
I also wonder if this has any bearing on Cablevision's national network (Rainbow Media) HD offerings? |
|
 | reply to nascar yea...would this have any effect on the MSNBC issue or any of cablevision's other HD's? |
|
 | said by appleman102:yea...would this have any effect on the MSNBC issue or any of cablevision's other HD's? MSNBC I doubt it, because there is a contract in place. That's really MSNBC's problem to get out of. I wonder on the national HD's, if Cablevision is not using the FCC loophole on those, and Verizon simply hasn't come to an agreement? |
|
 | Well finally its about time to actually hear an update on this after 10 almost 11 months since last JUly 25 when Eric Rabe stated on the policyblog that they were at the FCC,. how is that when they list today as a date when a complaint was filed for RSN HD , MSG HD and MSG + HD |
|
 | reply to nascar We're getting effed here in Buffalo too. Since the Sabres sold their broadcasting souls to the devil (the Dolans) we don't get their games in HD on Fios. Never mind that we could never get Cablevision here. Of course Cablevision has no problem letting their "Cable Buddies" Time Warner carry the HD feed of MSG. I only pray that this gets done before the hockey season starts. I don't think I can stomach another year of SD Sabres games. |

 | reply to Billy Bob80 Very cool...I got whited out on couple of those pages. I guess they didn't want to get into the fact that DirecTV had them. |
