If someone leaves CVC for VZ, they're leaving with everything, phone, tv and internet. If they decide to go to Directv, CVC can still hang onto the internet and phone.

This is one of those "enemy of my enemy" situations. Right - and ironically that court decision has nothing to do with provision of cable channels. It has to do with an FCC regulation prohibiting owners of MDUs with having exclusive carry contracts with specific TV providers. The cable industry took the FCC to court arguing that the FCC doesn't have that kind of authority. The court found in favor of the FCC. DirecTV, I assume, is seen as more of a competitor to Fios than to CV, so CV was trying to help DirecTV vs. Fios. Pretty juvenile. I also don't know that providers pay much if any more for HD feeds. It looks like they were trying to lay the case that the cable industry, as a whole, was using exclusive carry of RSNs to press an unfair competitive advantage. I noticed one post (think it was by billy2) about switching to TWC. Throughout the petition they seemed to use studies showing how these exclusive carry agreements affected DBS penetration rates in some markets (e.g. here in the Philly area the fact that DBS penetration is 40% below what would be anticipated due to CSN Philly - it is pretty striking how light the DBS penetration is in some areas around here).

The fact that CV gave rights to SOME companies (e.g. TWC) while not to others is the point, I think, they were trying to make - that CV (and not just them, but other cable providers) were using those exclusive carry agreements in an unfair way - trying to affect the ability of SOME providers to compete. It's really striking that, even in areas that CV doesn't service, they won't let Verizon carry MSG HD, but they'll allow TWC to carry it in those areas.

MSNBC I doubt it, because there is a contract in place. That's really MSNBC's problem to get out of. In the '50s the movie studios were forced to sell the theaters they owned to increase competition...in the '70s ATT was forced to break up the company to increase competition.

What the Dolans are doing here is virtually the same thing. Controlling the entire channel (no pun intended)...teams, building, programming, distribution.

Cablevision even has the balls to create commercials in the NY area saying that they are the only one that a person can see all NY sports teams in HD.

Kinda funny how when you change a few words around, it still makes sense to the lay person, but from a business sense, Verizon is totally oppose to it. Why should Verizon have to help the competition? If it's really about the customer choice as they claim against MSG...they would do it.

Also, has the FCC terrestrial loophole changed recently? At one time RSN had to make their programming available to the competition if the signals were transmitted via satellite. If they were transmitted by fiber or a dedicated link, and not OTA, they did not have to be shared with others. Comcast SportsNet Philly successfully used this to block DirecTV from carrying the channel in the late 90s.
