| [connectivity] Westell 2200 Problem? (UDP)
Hi all -
For about a week now, I cannot connect to the Yahoo! Messenger service. When I try, my "Internet" goes down (i.e., LAN PC unable to communicate with DNS Server. error = 'connection timed out', count = 3, 6, 9, etc...).
If I disconnect/reconnect the PPPoE session, all is well.
What could be causing this?
For reference, no changes have been made to my PC's or to my "network" (this basically happened overnight). Other Internet activity (i.e., web browsing) works just fine.
I have tried a friend's "known good" PC on my network and the same issue occurs.
Network configuration: Multiple PC's connected to a 4-port switch and a Westell 2200.
Additional information: When the Messenger tries to connect, it uses a high UDP port (50,000+), which I assume is a request to connect to their network. It does this over and over again until the "system" basically gives up.
Thanks. |

1 edit | Go to command prompt and try to ping this address. See if it at least resolves.
mcs.msg.yahoo.com
On my Frontier line, I had a problem where Trillian could no longer resolve the Yahoo Messenger service. I had to enter in the IP address to the messaging server manually, and then it connected. I'm assuming it's a bad DNS record on Frontier's end or what. Not sure if this is fixed yet or not. Right now I'm using Trillian Astra, with the hostname to Yahoo set at mcs.msg.yahoo.com and it is using port 5050.
Otherwise if it is the entire internet going down, something sounds messed up. Try switching your DNS servers to something such as 4.2.2.2 or OpenDNS to see if that fixes the problem (unless the line itself is having PPPoE/sync issues). -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |

When I do this, I receive a message stating "Ping request could not find host mcs.msg.yahoo.com. Please check the name and try again."
Thanks. |

| reply to KachiWachi In this case it sounds like your DNS servers are acting wierd. Can you ping the IP address of 76.13.15.31 ? That's Yahoo's messaging server for YIM. -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |

| If there is such an option in Yahoo IM, change the server address to the IP I had you ping. See if you have this problem afterwards. You can also change what DNS Servers you use as well there. OpenDNS is a good provider many people here use. -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |

Results: The same issue occurred.
Thoughts?
Thanks. |

Question: How can I get Verizon to swap out my DSLAM card?
Thanks. |

Note that "older versions of Yahoo! Messenger will no longer be able to connect through a firewall."
Any firewall? Settings? |

This seems like a DNS problem since you are able to get to it by IP address.
Next step is to try using different DNS server as suggested by Smith6612
Resolves here in NH but I'm not using Verizon DNS server.

| Why would the Verizon DNS (currently 71.242.0.12 and 71.252.0.12) not know about mcs.msg.yahoo.com?
I am able to successfully ping the secondary server (scs.msg.yahoo.com).
Wouldn't the Messenger automatically "roll over" to this (or to some other) server if the main one is not available for whatever reason?
Thanks. |

So how does one go about reporting a DNS error to Verizon?
Thanks. |

I enabled the Diagnostic Logging feature, then ran the Messenger.
To make a long story short, I changed the following items based on information from the logfile, and from another PC:
From: SocketServer = mcsb.msg.yahoo.com;mcsa.msg.yahoo.com;scs.msg.yahoo.com Host Name = mcs.msg.yahoo.com
To: SocketServer = scs.msg.yahoo.com;mcsa.msg.yahoo.com;mcsb.msg.yahoo.com Host Name = scs.msg.yahoo.com
This has resolved the issue for the time being.
I still do not understand why the PPPoE session is getting hung up, but I did learn a bit more about it.
1) If I have existing connections going (i.e., a web browser session), they will be maintained.
2) I cannot start a new browser session and have it successfully connect to a website.
Thoughts?
Thanks. |

| Is there anything such as a "Keep-Alive" setting or an "Always On" setting in your modem? Might want to check to see that the setting isn't set to turn on when internet usage is present. -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |
