| It needs to be fair... if done it should be $19 for the first 40GB then 10 cents per GB after that or something.. so even with 250GB of usage you would hit what the cost is now for comcast at 250GB... the whole people dont use more then 4GB is BS as every modem on cable networks I've seen use that up alone in ARP and other "noise" packets which providers like comcast count against you! | |

That would work a lot better than what they want IMHO.

For every CMTS vendor I've seen, broadcast traffic is not allocated against modem MACs in/out octet counters attached to the channel. Only unicast packets are counted. (meaning that background ARP / DHCP traffic gets written off to overhead, not allocated against any end-device directly)
Of course, the facts don't support your argument so I don't expect you to take them into account. | |

DNS Redirection - Counts against your cap.
Website Portals - Many MSOs have, Video/Music based portal sites, that's within their own interweb, and yet it does count against your cap.

| Re: It needs to be fair... You can say that. Caps are something used by inept ISPs who have a multitude of problems. It's a very easy cash-cow to use, and that's why majority of the inept ISPs use it.
I also believe ISPs should be able to manage their network(s), to provide the best QoS possible. I also believe network neutrality is the reason for asshats, to abuse to point of absurdity.

If I were forced to use it (like an AOL'ish service), then I'd have an issue.

as far as "portals", don't use them! the only time i *ever* log into my cox portal is when i'm paying my bill or the one time a month i check my cox webmail for any new announcements. if i set up my gmail account to fetch the mail, i wouldn't even need to do that. you are bringing up a non-issue.
the cmts counting broadcast packets is a better argument, but i'm deferring to espaeth  as he has touched the cisco ubr hardware (something i have yet to do). while i have had the privilege to meet some of the product line managers/cisco cable plant operators, i met them *way* before metered billing was an issue.

| Not all of us are trained in CMTS management.... I'm just going by the fact I've seen bandwidth monitors for Cable ISP's include that traffic in other countries... since we dont have bandwidth monitors for our cable co's here mainly, its hard to tell what they include here... but I have seen a cable modem that is jus connected to a router sitting idle for a month report 3GB used at the customers bandwidth monitor page that is provided by the ISP up in the good old EU | |
