The boo hoo economics of 5 sick days for people don't make sense. |

| Well dude, while I don't often see things as you do, I will partially agree with you, what you say is true ENOUGH to matter a LOT.
Many years ago I had a friend, he was a medical doctor from Canada. He was bitter that in Canada he didn't make enough for his beemer and such. He WAS a good guy, but he could only see things through his own self centered eyes, and he really WAS that way, friend or not.
Going to university and struggling to work inhuman hours and learn nearly impossible things certainly deserves significant pay, but that pay MUST be on scale with the rest of the sane world, and that isn't the case in the USA. Perhaps Britain, Germany, France, and Canada don't have it quite right, but:
It is MUCH better than the inhuman conditions here. Here in America, you lose your job, get ill with a lasting condition, and you can't buy insurance, not without lottery winnings. That ALONE is enough reason we MUST have reform. It is better for the state to provide preventative care and organized care, than death care after the fact. It is less costly, if you want to consider cold hard numbers.
But I can't change minds here, the conservatives here are so certain of their illusions and personal sense of invincibility, that "to hell with the less able".
What MUST be done is finding common ground between conservatives and liberals, finding where the truth lies between, and ADDRESSING the desperate issues of our times, NOT declaring wars on dictators just because we want to be badasses. This is not to say that I am against stopping N. Korea from annihilating the world. But only in a genuine threat. Hussein was an annihilator, but he wasn't aimed at the USA, and how many Americans have died, in the war and in hospitals for lack of care.
And, mind you, we don't even take care of our veterans, do you guys say to hell with the women and men who lay their lives down so you can live comfortably?
Yes, we have more technology here in some areas of medical practice, and capitalism is the reason why. But men, that doesn't preclude us from finding a way for the greater good and sanity.
I don't know about the rest of you, but here is an example of the republicans destruction on the nation:
Several years ago, being I am disabled, I got prescriptions from medicaid, which I was able to qualify for since my income wasn't enough for food, electric, and rent alone. Medicaid provided prescriptions and medical care based upon a favorable fee, the pharma corps hadn't reaped hell yet.
Then came their (the pharmas) lobbyists who are HUGE in number and rich and powerful. They managed to get the Republicans, in power at the time, to change the prescription laws and to create the supposedly wonderful medicare prescription coverage system. What the republicans didn't tell the voters was how the pharmas raised prices on the drugs multiples higher along with this, reaping in massively larger profits from the government.
So don't tell me we can't afford it or that democrats are evil for fighting for it. The truth lies in layers, complex layers, much of it hidden from the public, as much from republicans (or more IMHO) than the dems.
Both parties are guilty of being under the control of lobbyists, but I have more confidence in the libs, they are more honest about their intentions and plans, and in the end, do more for the mass of the nation as a whole. With the cons, it is all for the businesses alone, forsaking any balance.

But for many tests and treatments, there is a long waiting time. You should see all the Canadians that come to the hospitals in the Buffalo area for treatment. |

Their sales tax is around 13% to start with...
Oh and as mentioned before - if their system is so good why do they come to USA for treatment??? |

There have been cases of those who could not be treated in Canada due to the long wait for treatment or lack of services in some hospitals. Isn't that the same, being left out on the street?
There are lots of Canadians coming across the bridge, some as far as Toronto to be treated here. Why? The answer is simple. They can't get the services in Canada. And those who can afford it come here. Those who can't, are left to their system.
