[BC] Shaw Internet Speed vs. Monthly Bandwidth

Just wondering, who else thinks that the monthly bandwidth is too low for regular internet speed package?

I only turn on the download program for 48 hours, and I already exceed the monthly bandwidth......

Re: [BC] Shaw Internet Speed vs. Monthly Bandwidth

I use torrents and P2P and have not come close to my cap. If you've done this in 48 hours you need to really calm down, learn how to set up your sharing program better or switch to a business account.

Just get dsl, no caps to worry about.

^ took 1/2hr to write due to shitty shaw connection dropping out. Glad im trying a dsl service my self the start of june.

Re: [BC] Shaw Internet Speed vs. Monthly Bandwidth

No caps? Not sure what you mean. At least Shaw doesn't charge you if you go over.

Not sure on ops area but in MB, MTS has no cap on their dsl.

Re: [BC] Shaw Internet Speed vs. Monthly Bandwidth

You need to read the terms and conditions of your contract if you think there aren't limits...

Re: [BC] Shaw Internet Speed vs. Monthly Bandwidth

This seems to be only if you have insane usage, few of my mates have it and never got a call. I even called in and asked if its unlimited, so I would look to much into that line unless you upload say 1tb of data a month.

Sounds like a typical public tracker user...

Jeez, did you really need all that content *right now*? I move about 1-1.5TB a year (up+down) and I can barely keep up with watching all that.

While I'd love a 500GB monthly cap, I can work comfortably within Shaw's current limits.

live_strong

@shawcable.net

i find that Shaw is not as concerned about the caps as some other providers are. i occasionally go over the month high speed cap (60GB?) and have yet to get and e-mail/call/letter from Shaw.

if most of you bandwidth is download you should be fine-it is the uploading that Shaw does not like. and if you think about it 60GB (if that is what the high speed cap is-not 100% sure) is 2GB per day which is quite hard for average user to hit (checking e-mails, youtube, etc.)

New User

@shawcable.net
I don't know what's public tracker, I use emule, and I limit upload to 10kb/s, but still, 60GB can be reached at around 48 hours.

the ratio is about 1:50, which means I get 50kb of download per 1kb upload.

Re: [BC] Shaw Internet Speed vs. Monthly Bandwidth

If your upload is limited to 10 kbits, you must be downloading a F%$# load to reach 60 GIG in 2 days. That takes some real work. What are you D/L exactly? That's roughly 40 movies.

Or one heck of a lot of pr0n

New User

@shawcable.net
a high definition 1080p movie in TS format is roughly 25GB each, I can't even download 3 movies with 60GB limit.

for example, the dark knight is 30GB, the fifth element is 35GB.

Yes, the caps could be higher, and most power users would love to see them doubled (at least).

But if you want to, ahem, *borrow* HD movies, you might want to try scrape together an extra few bucks and spring for the Extreme-I service, which will give you an extra 40 GB/month.

Or go with DSL and put up with their service.

Your choice.

WTF, New user must be crazy 3 movies at 4gb each goes into 60GB goes 15x about which = 15 movies about.......what the hell is this guy downloading that his movies are 20 GB? Oh wait he thinks he can download uncompressed video......... I buy my movies from Itunes now in HD, and those are not even 25 GB. And its good enough for me. I think someone needs put his money where his usage is. I got 100GB Shaw limit and I manage to stay with in it. Even with my other activities.

New User

@shawcable.net

25GB is compressed video too, in H.264 or VC-1, some are MPEG2, I prefer absolutely the best video quality unless there is no such option. Only the best quality one are worth to keep, 4GB per movie is just not good enough especially when I watch them on my 52" Sony XBR9 LCD TV, but that's another topic.

When I was using DSL, it's 50% slower, but I could go over 200GB without a single notice from the ISP.

DSL at half the speed last me about two weeks only, if there is any ISP that offers 500GB bandwidth per month at more or less the same price, I would switch in an instant.

you get what you pay for. just think of the quality you'll get if you buy the DVD. when i acquire movies i aim for ~1GB and ~500MB for TV shows.

Telus is sort of unlimited.

Basically in their conversion from ADSL1 to ADSL2 technology they haven't been enforicing caps on ADSL2 connections.

If get a 6mbps package you have about an 80 percent changes of getting an adsl2 port, if you order the 15mbps package (turbo) a 100% changes of being on an adsl2 port (hence unmonitered).

The way shaw works with monitoring is that when some calls and complains about slow speeds, they check other users on that node. So if you're on an overcrowded node your more likely to get noticed, if you're not, you might not get noticed. It depends how badly they oversold the service in your area Once you've been flagged, you're continually monitored.

yah its true... when you look at your usage and you're on an adsl2+ port.. usage always says zero. They haven bothered to turn on the monitoring software on the new adsl2+ ports yet.

15mbps can only use adsl2+ ports. 6mbps can work on adsl1 or adsl2 ports, most of them they'll put you on an adsl2 port. but you never know.

Also any package you run with telus tv doesn't get monitored, but as the previous poster mentioned, telus won't offer you 15mbps with tv, and running 2 tv boxes at the same slows it down.

Re: [BC] Shaw Internet Speed vs. Monthly Bandwidth

I dont know but i have been Telus Internet user for the past 5 years. Recently i switched to Shaw and im 100x happier. I feel like you've never tried shaw and thats why u keep defending ADSL. Sure it is shared but even in the worst time of the day i get at minimum 10 mbps and has almost twice lower ping than Telus and its cheaper. Its a fact for my area so Telus needs to wake up....

About the caps, I have no problem with 100GB per month. Im sure you will be able to go over that a little without penalty. But if caps is your priority, than i guess telus is for you.

Thats exactly what it is for me. I'd take a slower overall speed and a larger/unlimited cap over a faster speed and a lower cap any day.

I've never had much luck with shaw caps (allthough its been about 4-5 years since the last time I tried shaw). Telus is only unlimited currently because of a technicality.

I did use teksavvy for a while because they had a 200gb cap (and an option to buy additional 100gb caps for 10 bux if you needed them). I'd be willing to pay reasonable amounts for extra bandwidth, but teksavvy is the only company i've seen thats willing to do it.

I guess it depends on your preference, speed or caps. I'm quite happy on telus' 15mbps package for 43 bones a month, and no current enforced cap. If that changes, I'd just go to whatever ISP best suited my needs, probably back to teksavvy.

Telus is so limited with their 15 mbs service that it is pathetic !!! Friend of mine had Telus TV + 6mbps connection and as soon as he turned on his 2 TVs (each has 1 box for TV) his internet connection goes down the toilet. Can't even open up a proper web page while TVs are on. He called the tech guys and the guy just said he can't split the connection and so he could not do anything. Also if you have Telus TV you must forget about 15mbps, max is 6mbps with Telus TV. Yes, you can get Internet from Telus and Cable TV from SHAW but your bundle savings vaporize. Recently i keep seeing telus commercials advertising "Bundle and Save - TV PHONE, Internet" and i just LMAO. If you want to have telus internet only than i guess most ppl will be happy with them, but your chances for bundle savings are zero. After all, we have to look at the whole picture...

I won't argue that point. Thats why I use Telus for my internet and shaw for my HD TV.

I use to have telus tv before HD. And yah if both boxes were on the internet speed really was hurt, but we generally didn't se both boxes at the same time.

I'm perfectly happy with my set up. I get an unlimited telus 15mbps per second package with telus, and HD with shaw.

If telus ever enforced the caps on adsl2 lines, I'd switch to teksavvy which offers more reasonable caps (200gb), plus you can add blocks to your account ($10 bux for every 100gb extra).

At least the options are reasonable. Shaw doesn't really offer any options for extra bandwidth, other then super-expensive business accounts.

25GB for a movie ....

That must take a stack of floppys to back that puppy up. Let's see, assuming those fancy 3 1/2's that hold 1.4 MB. Ok that would be ... oh my head hurts.

anonatwork

@shawcable.net

uhm, your problem is not the bandwidth but your need to have the best.

Good luck op, but you will never find what you want, sorry.

Either go with slower speeds and the CHANCE of not being monitored, or break down and get the lower quality movies and stick with the fast speeds.

I'm surprised that you haven't been chopped off yet for abusing your bandwidth cap. A few weeks I can see as being realistic, but 48 hours? The only way you'll be satisfied is... well... never....

i'd love more bw. Now that i'm able to stream content from usenet (I start watching 720p files about 1 min after it starts downloading with bintube newsreader), my monthly download has gone up since it's tv on demand.

but good thing about usenet is that you don't need to upload to download, so 100gb works for me. I'd love more but you can't have everything.
