 [Vista] No internet access.

I originally posted in the SCU forum but I'm not getting any responses and I don't think it's a security issue anyway. Here's the deal. I removed some really nasty spyware/adware from my step daughter's laptop. After I finished I have no internet access over ethernet. The HJT and MBAM logs look clean. I can log onto my router but according to Network connections I only have local access, no internet access. Any ideas?

Vista Home premium SP2. Sony Vaio laptop.

I would suspect that removal of the malware has damaged Winsock.

The following MS KB article has steps to try to determine if Winsock2 is corrupted:

»support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

At the bottom of the article are steps for recovering from Winsock corruption and repairing/resetting Winsock in Windows Vista.

Does that apply with SP2 installed. It said I should have only 10 entries under protocols. I have 24.
I tried the Winsock repair/reset. Didn't help.

Did you restart the computer running the netsh winsock reset command from an elevated command prompt?

Can you restart the computer in "Safe Mode with Networking" and see if you can access the internet?

No worky.
There's a yellow triangle over the taskbar icon. When hovering over it with the mouse it says "limited connectivity" Which I would guess is the same as local only in normal boot.

EDIT. The yellow icon went away but it still says local only.

Gotta go. Be back after church.

Are you able to uninstall and reinstall the network adapter drivers?

Also, is there anything logged in the Event Viewer that may be related?

Can you open the Hosts file and see if it has been modified?

Installed newest drivers yesterday

There are 5 errors from today. 3 say Source-MSSQLServerADHelper, Event ID-100, Task category-none. 1 says source-RasClient, EventID-20227. Task category-none. 1 says Source- EventSystem, EventID-4609. Task category-Event System. Basically the same errors for the last 3 days.

I rebuilt the Hosts file with Hostsxpert.

Can you double-click on those errors , particularly the RasClient error, to get more information on the errors.

It won't let me copy and paste. Is there another way besides highlight/Ctrl C?

The RasClient error says "Cold={44393C1A-23F-40F4-9D86-C150352DCC6F} The user(pc name here) dialed a connection named Broadband connection which has failed. The error code returned on failure is 0." 0 is an invalid number or parameters. This service takes two startup parameters.

The MSSQL error says "0 is an invalid number or parameters. This service takes two startup parameters."

The event system error report is quite long. The last line says the same as the 2 above.

To copy the error for pasting you could also right-click on the error (rather than double-click the error) > Copy > Copy Details as Text

Also, have you tried resetting the Local Area Connection?:

Start > right-click Network > Properties > Manage network connections > right-click Local Area Connection > Diagnose > then choose Reset the network adpater "Local Area Connection"

Done that but here's a new twist. It's telling me to plug into the network adapter "Local Area Connection *16". Never saw that before and have no idea what that is.

What is the output of an ipconfig /all command?

BTW, have you tried connecting via wireless?

ipconfig/all shows a whole bunch of stuff. Any way to paste it here? The ethernet adapter does not show my router IP.

Have not tried to connect wireless. She connects wireless at home and i didn't want to chance screwing that up too.

When you go here:

Start > right-click Network > Properties > Manage network connections

What is listed? Is there only the Local Area Connection?

It shows Local Area Connection. Wireless Network Connection. Network Connection Adapter, which is the Juniper Network Connection Virtual Adapter, which i believe is the that "local Area Connection *16 that diagnostics is looking for. Netwok Connections shows it as unplugged.
