Attaching a WNDR 3300 netgear router to a HN9000 hughes mod

I want to run two wireless notebooks to my Hughes HN 9000 modem. Attached a WNDR 3300 Netgear router to the modem, at times i cannot obtain internet, when I can it is extremly slow and sluggish. I was told the HN 9000 is also a router, could i have some kind of conflict here. When I disconnect the router things are fine again. Any Help?
