SmackWeasel : Yea your system should be beefy enough to handle the load
while in game, as well as with other tasks. Two things I may conclude with:

1) You could check bios setting to see whether your on-board sound is set properly. It may in fact be set for off board sound (hardware) or even a lower codec value. Assuming you didn't build the PC, after buying it without a hardware soundcard, I would think the factory setting by default was for software sound. But what the heck, check it anyway.

2) In an earlier post you wondered whether Your MOBO has shoddy audio. You might not be far off with that Assessment.

Your motherboard uses what's called digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion or, a "codec" chip. (the PC is digital your headset/speakers are analog) the quality of analog audio depends on the quality of the codec used on the motherboard.

Generally hardware sound cards offer a higher codec value than motherboards offer. As well as full duplex 24 bit sound resolution, higher sampling rates, higher signal to noise ratios. Personally I would never use my MOBO for sound.

--
0111000001100101011000010110001101100101

SmackWeasel : I think you may be missing my point. I use Ventrilo in game as well. My hardware soundcard drives both game sounds and Vent. Your onboard software sound runs both Vent and the game sounds. You are using CPU cycles to drive sound tasks. Your game demands may be taking precedence over your sound demands.

Question: Does your voice fade out when you're not in a game?

As for dropping money you now have a great new mic/headset with the old unit as a back up. You should consider that even an inexpensive (under $30*) add-on sound card moves the sound tasks to that device not to your CPU.

Anyway good luck to you.
SmackWeasel : Indeed so. I'm assuming from your last post, you are using on-board (software) sound. The PCI (hardware) card would most certainly help, and most likely end your problem. Here's how it works; Your onboard software sound works off CPU cycles. Adding a hardware soundcard frees up your CPU from sound tasks. This would be most critical during a game.

One other thing you should check in your in-game setting, under "sound", if there is on fact a setting for this (BF2 has one); check to make sure your settings are for software or hardware sound.

Again, on-board MOBO sound = software.
