4 edits | Microsoft's new Bing search hijacks Google toolbar in IE6 My IE6 browser just got hijacked by Microsoft's new web browser, "Bing". Google is my default, and typing into the Google search bar now brings up MS's Bing search engine. There is no option on the Bing site to opt-out, or turn it off. Apparently, Microsoft is aware of the problem and they recommend IE6 users upgrade to IE7 or IE8.

BING has hijacked my IE6 address bar google search »www.google.com/support/forum/p/c···61&hl=en
The following is only a temporary fix, as it only works in Google's Toolbar. It DOES NOT work when searching from IE6's Address bar.
In IE6, go to your menu bar:
Tools -->Internet Options ---->Security ------>Restricted Sites
Add "www.bing.com" and "bing.com" to your list of "Restricted sites".

Though I was able to turn off tabs, I couldn't move the button bar; I like it above the address bar. IE7 won't let me move it. I don't like ANYTHING about the interface of Office 2007. I hate the Ribbon!
Please, let's not turn this into a MS Office 2007 interface debate. This post is about MS's Bing search engine hijacking the user's default search engine in IE6.

You may be able to find a cheap motherboard and ram for it though! Just a happier thought!
Edit - You can get a 256 stick here for $69: »www.memorysuppliers.com/ram80non.html
You may find it cheaper elsewhere though.

| Re: Microsoft's new Bing search engine hijacks IE6 browsers Yeah, some people can't really upgrade their computers because of how outdated they are. And, as you noticed, that kind of RAM costs tons more than the more modern RAM. I myself primarily used a PC from the end of 2001 that used PC133 RAM. Just about a week ago I purchased and built a new PC (and I was surprised about the price of RAM for it: $50 for 4 GB!). But I guess the older RAM costs more because it's still in high demand.
As for IE6, I was using Firefox, but sometimes used IE6 for when I needed to easily extract files from its cache (which it collected from webpages). I still have my old PC hooked up for those occasions.

1 edit | Re: Microsoft's new Bing search engine hijacks IE6 browsers I'm betting you could spend thousands, fill your Dell Dimension 8250 with as much SDRAM as it can hold, then load your closet chock full with backup sticks-- and Bing would still hijack your Google Toolbar in IE6.
I'm with you. Live with what you've got until you buy a better machine. Nor did I notice your thread title being "Can someone recommend some RAM for me?"

| IE6 is very important. Slashdot.org has a discussion today that claims that IE6 is the undisputed champion when it comes to corporate computers.
I know this to be true in many large organizations. The main reason for this is that one or more mission critical web based applications still need IE6 for compatibility. Upgrades are available, but the pricetag is high.
»tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid···2/134224
The article has links to the statistics. IE6 and IE7 are neck and neck.

| Re: Microsoft's new Bing search hijacks Google toolbar in IE6 I'm still running IE6 here and on an older limited RAM laptop, both using WinXP.
There is a serious bug in IE7 and IE8 in that if you do a Windows repair install after upgrading IE, you will not be able to connect to the Internet. I'm not interested in upgrading with that kind of situation still not fixed. It's because MS integrated IE so tightly into the operating system. No other browser behaves that way.
Furthermore IE6 works just fine for the few times I need it. Normally I use Firefox. -- "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and generally accepted accounting principles.

Saying they recommend upgrading to IE7 or IE8 and not also adding that they stated they will issue an update soon to correct the issue is nothing more than FUD.
Now look what MS has gone and done. As of late last night, they have corrected the problem. Damn them. Damn them to hell.

| Is this an issue with the Address bar that you normally type URLs into, or the Google search toolbar that you installed as an optional addon? These two fields are very different.
When using the Address bar, if IE thinks the text is a valid URL, it just goes to that URL. But if it's regular text, IE then tries to perform a web search using a search engine. After typing in a search query, IE will redirect you to this URL:
hxxp://auto.search.msn.com/response.asp?MT=address_bar_text&srch=4&prov=your_default_search_engine&utf8
So even if you've selected Google as your default search engine, IE will still send your search through MSN search first. MSN Search will then bounce you to Google to finish the search. It is this step that is failing, MSN Search (and Live Search) are transforming into Bing, and Bing isn't doing the old fashioned redirect to your default search engine.
This functionality is baked into IE6, there's little you can do to fix this specific issue other than use a different web browser, or hope that Microsoft fixes it. -- less talk, more music
