Need internet in Chicago - no ATT or Comcast on Street

I am in dire need of an internet connection at a place here in Chicago (Pulaski and 47th). Comcast is not on the street and ATT has a full DPG line in the street, so no more DSL can come down it. (and its a dead end so to get one more DSL account there is no way a new DPG or fiber line is coming)

I have one wireless quote for 1.5m symmetric connection for $230 per month which is outrageous. Anyone have any solutions? I need to run about 768 of voip up (ulaw) for telecommuters and just need decent download.

Got any ideas? I tried my sprint 3g connection, but it was not good enough.

first six of phone is 773 847

and address is 4400 w 45th st

Re: Need internet in Chicago - no ATT or Comcast on Street

Based on a pre-qual, It appears we can do the following, however based on your speed requirement and your comment at cost for the wireless quote you have, you may need to adjust the speed, or your budget.

Pre-qual distance 3.54 miles (18703 feet)

IDSL 144k (Not the speed you need per your request) - $99.95/month
Fractional T1, 384k (Not the speed you need per your request) - $299.95/month
Fractional T1, 768k - $349.95/month
Full T1, 1.5 - $399.95/month
Bonded T1's, 3.0 - $649.95/month
Bonded T1's, 4.5 - $899.95/month
Bonded T1's, 6.0 - $1,249.95/month

All the prices listed, are based on a 1 year agreement, lower cost options for 2, or 3 year agreements.

All packages listed include a Full SLA »lbdsl.com/sla-v4.pdf

I am not interested in T1s and the needed equipment (and cost) and how can you provide DSL service if the DPG line in the street is full. (ATT engineering tells me there is one port open on the RT but the line in my street is full) IF you have any ideas, let me know.

you realize this is the business forum, so you are going to be getting business grade services and their corresponding prices, right?

Yes,this is for a business.... and I am just seeing what is out there as it is not an easy thing to do. Its pretty simple with Comcast and ATT to know their pricing.

"Business grade" doesn't mean 100% guaranteed uptime and I don't require a SLA. (Frankly I catch waaaay more grief if the home connection goes down!!) And as businesses dump T1s and move straight to ethernet and so forth connections, they have no appetite to pay for the related phone and switches and other gear for T1s.

Any wireless guys out here?

What exactly do you think is needed for Data (internet) T1? All you need is a T1 Router (just like you need a Cable modem, or DSL modem). You may be thinking of a mixed Phone, and data T1, but that is not what we are talking about here.

Fixed Wireless is good in some places, and for some applications, however speaking from experience with 2 different ISP's, trying to run VoIP over them, can be problematic. Just an FYI.

Good luck with your search.

Thanks, I am going to test a wireless group with voip that promises great things. If good, I will just suck it up for a year and re-evaluate then.

Re: Need internet in Chicago - no ATT or Comcast on Street

What about buying a phone line from one of your neighbors and having it moved to your building.

Or finding someone who doesn't use theirs for DSL and getting them to put it on theirs and then running a cable or wireless to you?

Something like that.

We are not at&t, what they can or cannot do, has nothing to do with what we can provide.

That said, what we quoted you is based a pre-qual. Any of the options we posted for you, have nothing to do with an at&t RT, or any at&t service at all.

You're not able to get "residential" grade service so I wouldn't expect low prices for "business" grade service either. Honestly, the full T1 price quoted to you by Brent is pretty good, especially considering it is on a 1 year term and not a 3 year term. If you really need 768K of upstream bandwidth, you are going to have to pay for it in the form of a full T1 at least.

A spring 3g connection is not going to be anywhere near the same service level as a true fixed wireless solution. A 1.5M symmetrical wireless is pretty expensive at $230 but that may be business grade. Maybe you can convince a wireless provider to give you a cheaper deal if you don't want the support side of it a well.

Try asking in here: »Wireless Service Providers or here: »Wireless Users Chat. The first one might be better to try and locate a WISP in your area. Chicago is a pretty good sized area so I would imagine you have some competition there.

Fixed wireless is a good idea in this situation if it's available. EvDO is a bad, BAD idea for a business-grade connection. Even when it's hyped up with Accel Wireless stuff.
