This is no longer true. If you have X unsuccesful connection attempts within Y time, Bell will block all PPPOE traffic (discovery, authentication) for Z minutes, and that includes trying test@test.

I hate to break the news to you.. But it's not just Bell who has such a protection mechanism in there systems... It is possible to lock your self out of almost any ISP if you do enough pppoe or DHCP requests... I have on a couple occasion had to call Telus to get the port reset when tweaking a router....This is by no means exclusive to Bell. It is an industry standard practice.

51019512 : I think it was posted in here last night. There are now 18links you could get a connection on and only 8 of those I think have mlppp enabled so you will have a little bit before you get a bonded connection.

I had the same issue during both previous maintenance, just connect with non-mlppp for a bit then multi-link will work again.

The appear to be DB9 connectors. A bit too small to be AUI (old style) ethernet connectors.

Or is that a terminal server that has serial cables that go to the serial console ports of nearby equipment ?

When I was working in Liberty Village, Beanfield had a straight connection to 151 Front. Our office had ethernet connection going 2 floors up to their fibre backbone to 151.

TSI doesn't have just ADSL customers. They resell their network to a few outfits, and also do web hosting.

Considering their rate of growth, and how many times they've had to upgrade hardware, installing some extra capacity is not bad at all.

Also remember that the ERX1440s were rates at over 40gbps throughput, but had performance problems with just a couple of GigEs. The adsl-side edge routers don't just move packets, they also terminate the L2TP sessions from each BAS, as well as terminate PPPoE sessions for each customer and then route the resulting IP packets. (and I assume do packet accounting as well).

So you may need what appears to be kick ass Gbps ratings to get sufficient bandwidth and CPU horsepower inside to do the job.

reL: noise:

I still remember when a major bank replaced one of their mainframes with a new water cooled one (back in early 1990s before most of you were born) . They needed to bring in a plumber for the installation, and it had huge pipes in the cooling cabinet which directly interfaced with the lieberts. No fans, no noise. The quietness of that area was incredible.

The Tandem Cyclones were next to my VMS boxes, and they bore their name right. They had huge blowers and generated a lot of wind. The Tandem repair guy had told me that this was so that should their be air conditioning failure in the room, the high air speed over the electronics would still cool the system sufficiently to allow it to continue to run while they would have to shutdown other systems due to high temp in computer room.

I suspect a lot of carrier grade equipment would also have oversized ventilation (except for 1U servers where it is hard to get large fans in there).

We've got 10Gbps of AGAS circuits that are coming online... 9 now.

The 256Gbps is on the internet facing side in capacity on that box... I believe we have something like 40 to 50Gbps through the various providers (Peer1/tiscali/cogent/etc...).

We offer other services, not only DSL so stuff like Transit/collocations/etc, so the potential capacity needs land up larger on the internet side by a bit.

Totally not true, this entirely depends on the type of fibre, and the manufacturer. Most fibre will definitely have signal loss when it is coiled or bent too sharply.

Just spoke with Marc and we were wrong on the numbers.... It wasn't 55Gbps that we had ready to go but rather 256Gbps.... I was off by 1 single Gig and a few 10s.... LOL.... Only a 200Gbps discrepancy!

....for both C300s no less! :)

R0CKY : The C300s are setup to go up to around 55Gbps right now (but can go "way" more if needed as identified earlier). We have around 20Gbps of availability between the DSL AGAS circuits.

We're going to add 20Gbps to Peer1, 20Gbps to S&D and 30Gbps between the two, so we should have a bunch of growing space.

The S&D has very reliable power (arguably the best in the building) so we're planning to migrate a lot of or more crucial stuff over there.... The plan is for both redundancy and up time.

I have done some work on c150's...(impressive in there own right) But the c300's are a different animal...

Do you guys use the Juniper EX series switches too? Or just for your routing infrastructure?

I don't know.. But I don't find e320 or any juniper equipment that exciting any more... Just another box that move bites.... /me showing my years in the industry...

Not only is it nice to show customers what it looks like inside 151 Front, what is being done, changes, modification etc etc. but for employees that don't get to go, to actually have an idea of what's going on there is super cool too.

Yeah I remember when my boss was talking to me a couple months ago when we moved to another datacenter... We have a 5U Quad-CPU MONSTER box. The thing takes 3 person to move. He says his ears rang and his back hurt for 2-3 days after that. And he's about your build.

Robrr : Ya the people at 151 would setup a bulkhead where they string in x number of fibres that you request. You connect your fibre patches to that bulkhead

From that bulkhead it would run to the cross connect field the strands would terminate to the Fibre Termination Box. There would be a large group of these termination boxes together and then the people at 151 would patch as necessary to route the signals coming from Teksavvy's fibre to wherever it needs to go ie Peer 1.

This morning I was working in one of our server rooms... And we do not let people in the room with out ear protection.... In fact this room is so loud that we use a internal chat client to communicate with each other...

NeTwOrKDawg : The best is the fees they charge for conduit for running from the risers to your suite.. they charge per foot per month for the conduit. :) Also I believe they charge per foot/month for the pipes for the water cooling system to a suite.

I used to love going to 151, wish I could go there again. Nothing beats going for street meat at 3am on all nighters lol. Still have my access card, but they have to be "renewed" annually. Spent many a long night there with my friends at Accelerated Connections...

And those guys in Switch & Data can be fun.

R0CKY : You basically request the "x" amount of fibres from your collocation provider, they charge you a setup fee (and monthly after it is setup).... They would then take care of pulling the fibres to/from the various points. Suspect you need some sort of building authorization to pull between suites....

Does the building owner have its own people who physically put the cables in between 2 points that you specify ? Or do you just string your cables along "public use" paths on the ceiling (or under floor) between different points in the building ?

Are you allowed to lift tiles on the floor ? Or does that require special permission that deactivates alarms ? (For instance, if you need to string a cable between 2 racks on opposite sides of an aisle).

Or the Rogers $30 for 6GB which came back yesterday.
