 | | Re: This is stupid Only a Moron would be ignorant of the history then make a post such as yours. You don't even know when Tivo, ReplayTV or Microsoft started producing DVR's. ReplayTV beat Tivo to market but Tivo started the R&D before ReplayTV. Both companies started working on the technology at relatively the same time, ReplayTV was able to get a hardware box to market a month or two quicker than Tivo because Tivo originally focused on selling to the TV providers like Dish rather than producing a consumer box which they did later after Replay started announcing their intent to do so. | |

So yes, they began work very close together. However the way I've read it, ReplayTV was first to demonstrate a working prototype at CES (I believe) but Tivo actually just beat ReplayTV to market. Or the shipped first or something. Different Internet sites reverse this back and forth. Dish began their DVR somewhere in this timeframe as well. Many of Tivo's patents are surprising given the amount of prior art that existed at the time. -- "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini

 | | Loved my MCE, but didn't love the BSODs and missed recordings, and that was before they even implemented Cable Card support. I didn't even want to deal w/ the mess that is/was PC Cable Cards.
TiVo is super wife and babysitter friendly, never misses a recording, and just plain works.
I like to play around and tweak my PC, but not when it comes to TV. I just want to sit down and not worry about drivers or codecs or anything else. To me the little money I pay each month is for ease of use and peace of mind.
So you go and enjoy your MCE, but I'm certainly no moron for paying my monthly check to TiVo. | |
