Giganews is making a significant announcement - they are the first to hit 300 days of retention. This isn't just announced retention or potential retention - this is the actual number of days that a binary post has existed on Giganews' news server. Not too shabby.
Today's announcement is the latest in the heated retention wars. As server hardware has plummeted in price, the result is longer article retention. This means better performance and tight competition, which ultimately benefits the newsgroup community and customer.
"Reaching 300 days of retention is a definite high-water mark for us and for Usenet as a whole," Philip Molter, CTO at Giganews, said, "As the industry leader, we are excited to offer such lengthy retention times to our customers, and we continue to work toward our goal of a full year’s worth of binary retention."
Although Giganews may have reached 300 days, there's still stiff competition from Astraweb who comes close with 285 days. There's a tight race between the two. Despite slightly lower retention, Astraweb has the “cool” factor working in their favor thanks to high community praise and a reputation for excellent service. Today’s announcement should push the race even tighter.

And for me the "cool" factor is the fact that Astraweb is less than half the price that Giganews charges for the same service. I know people that have GN and are quite pleased with the performance except for the reduction is retention a few months ago which has now been rectified. However I am just plain cheap and went with the lowest cost option outside of a block account and have nothing but good things to say about Astraweb. | |

We had announced earlier on how we had been moving towards to a full 400 days of binary retention back in March. While reaching this milestone, our daily increase of binary retention has reached the 300 day mark and will continue to increase by one day each day after.

That is ridiculous As a long time GN subscriber I can only praise them...trying out AW this month and finding alot of incompletes on older posts...same posts are all complete on GN...maybe just a hiccup but we'll see by months end...$20 month would be welcome back in my pocket if the retention is there | |

| I've been using AW for 4 - 5 months and have never had any incompletes on older posts. I have gotten many posts at near 300 days with no trouble. AW is perfect for me at only $11 a month. Guess you should just stick with what works best for you be it GN or AW. | |

Hope it goes up a little more than their advertised 365 day retention for a little safety net room. Not that it would matter much with how big files are now days. Newsgroup providers would need well over 20 to 40 days more for the ideal safety net room for when usenet starts to grow bigger. Either by more uploaded useful posts or spam. Sometimes it can happen at a moments notice. I doubt any of them will do this but you never know. | |

Just got confirmation from a trusted source that Astaweb and Giganews headers are lower than their actual retention amount stated on their front page. Astraweb more so than Giganews. Sucks when a lot of indexing sites aren't going back to 400 days yet. Some only up to 300 or a little more. I know that is all we need now but what happens once we reach 350 to 400 day retention then what? I don't mind using headers I just hope all providers include a fast compression method to download 350 to 400 + days of headers. | |

Astraweb more so than Giganews. Keep in mind this is not because they choose to do it. This is something almost all providers are dealing with. The posting / retention volume has far outgrown what anyone ever thought, way back when. For example, a.b.boneless has reached the limit specified in the Usenet RFC. With that said, to take and store ANY new headers for boneless, the oldest have to be purged. Granted, I have yet to see someone complain about that...as I can not imagine anyone would download ALL headers in boneless and then go through them. To be honest, a lot of band-aids had to be applied and pushing the limits of the software had to take place for providers to get where they are now with header retention. This included custom hacks that in house development teams had to come up with. The solution for it all is to upgrade the software to a 64 bit version. However, I have seen some news readers absolutely tank when given headers under this addressing scheme. Diablo (powering many of the servers in use today) claims a 64 bit version is in development..until then...we can only wait...and cross our fingers.  Thanks swintec! That was a very interesting read! I wonder what newsgroup providers will do once we reach in to the 1000 day retention mark ? Wonder how soon it will be as well ? Guessing at least a good 2 to 5 years from now but you never know. | |

| Astraweb is now showing 315 days. It will be interesting to see where everyone stands on retention at the end of the year. Will they continue to grow after 365 days (Giganews and Astraweb) / 400 days (Highwinds) or will retention level off for awhile. Hopefully the providers have buffered in enough storage for Usenet growth this time around.
