| WIFI-x-Tender
Guys,
A lot of you all know me and know that I do not play games when it comes to finding a solution to a wireless problem. I would never bring this to your attention if I was not satified that it worked. I told them that if it worked, I would let my friends know about it. They haven't paid me a cent for this.
I came across this while researching passive antennas and found this, »www.wifi-x-tender.com I decided to contact them and I was told that they are in the middle of doing beta testing on the product. I asked to be a beta tester because I was in a bind with a project I was working on and this looked like it would work. When it was shipped to me, I took it out of the envelope and thought, "you got to be kidding me, this looks like an oversized bandaide".
Anyway, I put it on my laptop and was surprised. I was picking up my wireless router at my house with a stronger signal level. They also gave me enough to put on my cell phone. I went driving around in places that I knew the cell signal was spotty, and was impressed with the results. It did not clear all of the spotty areas, but it made a little over half of them go away. Please check them out. I'm really impressed with this product, and I think that it will help out a lot of ya'll. It appears that they are going to go live with sales somewhere between the middle of June. I'm sold on this and can think of a lot more uses for it. -- Joe Miller DSLbyAir, LLC 228-831-8881 www.dslbyair.com |

| joe, these things have been around forever. They have been for sale on ebay for quite a while too. At one point, some vendors were giving them away for free when you purchased another item etc. . I wonder if any of our more technical users could describe how these could work????. -- »www.wavecrazy.net

| Tim,
I had the same mind set as you with this. You are referring to those old cell phone boosters that you put in your cell phone between your phone and your battery. Dude...I'm telling you this is workingt for me.
Please show me a link to Ebay where these are being sold. I've looked, there is no such animal. I've tested it out on many different devices. They least improvement was an Intermec CB3 handheld device. it improved it between 3 and 5 dB. Hell I even put it on my FM radio antenna on my truck and got more channels than I had before.
I have some left over, send me youe address offlist and I'll send it to you. You make up your own mind. -- Joe Miller DSLbyAir, LLC 228-831-8881 www.dslbyair.com |

Might actually be really helpful around here if it works. Wait a few days and you'll see a rundown of my thoughts on CricKet's cell service around here. They don't have enough towers so I can't get a signal at my desk, among other places. Sounds like this would fix that.
Heck, Pocket Communications (the other unlimited provider around here) and T-Mobile also have rather mediocre coverage that might be remedied with this.
Wonder how it works...
@superdog I know the little signal booster thing you're talking about. That one *was* placebo effect if you ask me. Didn't do anything. I mean, how is it going to help reception when the antenna for the phone is elsewhere? |

I remember these...they never worked. You know me. I would never blow smoke up anyone's a$$ here. They plan on putting a video on their web site doing a live before, during, and after in real time along with pictures.

| The material looks like a piece of vinyl. They would not tell me what it was. I guess it is a trade secret. Anyway, you can cut this to any size you need. See instructions:
LAPTOP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. It is important to note that our 100% Money back guarantee is void once the WIFI-X-TENDER is removed from the backing material. We recommend test fitting the product using Scotch tape first to verify results. This is accomplished by taping the product to the back of the laptop, either at the bottom back of the screen or top backside of the screen. Additionally we have noted that some laptops actually perform better if the product is placed under the bottom of the laptop. This is based on the different locations of the WIFI antenna on your laptop. You will see improved service with either location, but there is no reason not to attempt to get the best service possible so please experiment first before final installation.
2. Once you have determined the best location to install, clean the intended installation location with any household cleaning product and then dry it with a paper towel. A clean surface will ensure adhesion and longer product life.
3. If you are using a Mini-laptop or Net book and the product is to large for your device simply trim it with a pair of scissors at one end. Do NOT trim it at BOTH ends, this will make installation difficult. Once you have determined the proper length, mark it on the back of the product with pen or pencil. Use a cup or other round object to trace in the rounded corners, this is important, sharp corners will unpeel easily. Cut the product and proceed to the next step.
4. Use a piece of Scotch tape and place in on one end of the WIFI-X-TENDER with about 1 inch on the product and 1 inch overlapping off the end of the product on the original factory end.
5. Place the WIFI-X-TENDER over the location and tape down the starting end to your laptop.
6. Lift the free end up to a 45% angle then reach under and pull the edge of the fixed end gently towards you. The WIFI-X-TENDER should begin to free itself of the backing material.
7. Slowly work the backing material off the product, ensuring that the product is gently pressed onto the laptop as you go. If you go slowly it is very easy to go back if there are air bubbles or wrinkles and work them out.
8. Once installed gently work out and wrinkles or air bubbles that remain by using a cloth or folder paper towel to press down with to affix the WIFI-X-TENDER. Work from the center to the edges.
They "thing" you showed me cannot be cut. This material stays on the outside of the device, not inside. Right now the colors they have are black and silver. They plan on having more colors available soon. They will also do custom work with a small setup fee.

| Christ if this works as you say it does it would be a literal life saver around here. We have exactly one cell phone tower to cover the entire area, and in places the coverage ranges from spotty to non existent. Just yesterday me and a friend has to walk close to 2 miles down the road to even get cell coverage and call for help when his truck's master cylinder went out. |

DSLbyAir Premium,MVM join:2003-04-10 Ocean Springs, MS | This is not a cure all for every problem but it sure reduces those spoty connections for cell service. This was originally designed for the poor wifi design for laptops but they found more uses for the product. |

| We get into those areas where you call still "says" it has a connection, but with 0 bars on every band, like it is just barely out of range.... that is a good example of how yesterday went. I know that once you get far enough into a no service area, you are just out of luck. Oh the benefits of a small town, lol
Sounds like these people may be getting a slice of my pie so that i can get a little more coverage around here. |

| reply to DSLbyAir DSLbyAir -- Very much appreciated, I ordered a couple to test out. We focus on apartments/resorts/etc where clients connect directly with their laptops, so this may be a big help for us. We currently use Ruckus units as "signal boosters" but they are quite pricey and I have been looking for a cheaper solution. |

| reply to superdog Tim,
When you get this and test it out, l will be interested to know how it does for you. But make sure you follow the directions on their web site, »www.wifi-x-tender.com They say it should last 3 to 5 years on whatever you put it on, if done correctly. |

It would be interesting to see if a similar gain would be achieved using aluminum "duct" tape. |

| reply to EMC_guy EMC_guy....
Did you order one of this yet? My guess is no. Do you realize that people can and will get cut by metal tape? I do not know exactly what this is made of, but one thing I know is that it is not a piece of metal tape. So before you pop off with a statement like this, order one and see for yourself. Hell, they have a 100% money back. What do you have to loose. Follow the instuctions on their web site, and if it doesn't work for you, send the damn thing back, and they will send you your money back.
To everyone else with a brain in their head....I have tried this and find that it does work. I'm sure I could of used a piece of aluminum foil instead. But I do a lot of work in the field and the foil thing would not work in my environment. I'm sure I could I could use the foil if my laptop stayed in one place like EMC_guy does....but I wouldn't get any work done.
I look at this as a cheap solution for poor Internet problems due to signal strenght and/or below par radio cards inside of laptops. I do not care how they figured out a solution, all I care about is that it works. If it looks so easy, howcome no one else has come up with something like this?
BTW...just for shits and grins, I put some of this on my antenna on my truck and it actually helped with weak signals. I'm just trying to figure out what else I can put this on to test. -- Joe Miller DSLbyAir, LLC 228-831-8881 www.dslbyair.com |
