eq2675 : FWIW, I just went to a clients home last Friday where they were getting a new install for AT&T DSL using a customer provided used DSL modem.

Well the client had spent hours on the phone with Tier 1 support without a resolution. The first thing I did with the modem was to check VCI and VPI settings. It was 8/35. Changed it to 0/35 and all was well.

Support at both EarthLink and AT&T should be on top of this, but apparently they are not.

eq2675 : Microsoft notified it's Action Pack subscribers that the default delivery was changing from mailed media to download media. Well it's time to bite the bullet and increase my 9 year old 1.5 MB DSL over BellSouth / AT&T lines.

So I called the EarthLink CSR last night. Told them I needed more bandwidth and I didn't want to pay over the $49.95 that I was being billed for 1.5 service. CSR said a tech would call me with the upgrade information.

Well this morning I awake to having SYNC, but no surf even after the usual power cycle. No problem I have Bellsouth DSL Lite on the other phone line. Maybe EarthLink is working on it.

So after work this evening I see still SYNC, but no surf. So I telnet in to my trusty Zyxel 642M to see my speed is over 3200 download and 360 something upload.

I call support to see what is up. Well the CSR tells me I have been upgraded and starts going over the power cycle modem light thing. I quickly ask if there is any possibility that my VCI/VPI settings need to be changed. He replies "NO".

Well after a few more lines of conversation I ask him to tell me what the VCI, VPI settings should be. I'm at 8, 35 and have been for 9 years. He responds 0, 35. I made the changes I am up and running.

I asked the CSR if there was anything else I could help him with (I'm in I.T. too). He said no.

Ran Dr TCP and bumped up my RWIN to 34848 and now speakeasy reports 3042 down and 304 up. Whoopee!
