I am pro-division of labour and I believe in having the modem be a modem and a router be a router... |

Too confusing with those silly combo units which outwardly are too easily mistaken for simple modems. (THEN just try to connect !)

@teksavvy.com | BTW, I still use an old STH modem and it's a rock solid work horse.
(STH = Speed Touch Home from Alcatel, for any rookies among us) |

im not sure about speedtouch cheapest 585 i found was $110 i guess i should call bell ask if i can keep the modem and for what price

| reply to cuztomized2 I have seen 2wire HG-G's for sale for 20 to 40 bucks at the hock shop's. A 10 minute firmware upgrade and you're good as used. I have used this software on two modems 2701HG-G modems successfully. I won't pay 75 bucks for a used modem for Hell. Check out your local pawn shops to see what they have.

Unless you are going the unthrottled way then you need to get a compatible router such as the Linksys WRT 54GL and the fixppp.org firmware for that unit. |

The TP-LINK TD-8816 ADSL modem (one port wired router) is so cheap at $29, I bought two in case I ever need to implement multiple link (two or more phone lines) MLPPP. The best price with shipping was from CTY Computers. Buy a stand-alone router that supports the Tomato/MLPPP firmware. If you travel through the States or have someone there that can help you, the T-Mobile WRT54G-TM router is an awesome $20 USD clearance router that is compatible with the Tomato/MLPPP and DD-WRT firmwares. Again, you may want to buy two, having one as a backup.
As Mr_Fix_It said, you must use two pieces of equipment, a modem and a router, to avoid Bell's throttling. |

3 edits | WRT54G2 will not work with Tomato/MLPPP
cuztomized2 you should buy a router that is compatible with both alternative firmwares. The WRT54G2 will not work with Tomato/MLPPP. Right now, Tomato/MLPPP is the only means to deal with Bell's throttling. Supposedly down the road, DD-WRT will support MLPPP, but it ain't here yet. Also, WRT54G2 doesn't have external replaceable antennas, like the original WRT54G(S).
This faq shows which Linksys, Buffalo, and Asus routers work with Tomato/MLPPP. If you are trying to economize, look for a used Linksys WRT54GS (v1-v4) on craigslist. |
