anon : I am in the Houston area and have been having this same problem for quite some time. My connection will be perfect for weeks on end then all of a sudden will start dropping anywhere from every couple of minutes to several hours between drops. I have a dry loop (no pots) Elite service. I am on hold right now with AT&T dispatch to get a tech out for the 3rd time in a week. They do see a problem, get it to run clean, leave and within a few hours the issue is back. I have a 2Wire 2701-HB and when I go into \\192.168.x.x\management and select "DSL Diagnostics" the primary thing I see when the problem is going on is CRC errors.

In actuality this problem has been going on for well over a year for me.
