nycityny posted : My brother just purchased a new house in Northridge, California. AT&T is the provider of phone service in the area. Nonetheless, he was able to sign up for Verizon FIOS which he now has (phone, Internet, television).

How is it possible for one house to be serviced by both of these companies? He also has Time Warner available to him, giving him three choices for phone and Internet service. AT&T does not offer u-Verse there so he could not get TV service from them. He does have AT&T u-Verse in his old house a few miles west.

Also, the FIOS installer pointed out the battery back-up that was installed in the event of a power failure. So is Verizon FIOS phone service more like Time Warner VOIP than an actual landline? An AT&T landline would continue to work in a power outage without the installation of a battery back-up.
