WSAH switching to Retro TV July 1st.

Since the NYC, Northern NJ and CT systems get this channel I thought I'd post,

Retro TV Finds A Home In New York

Retro TV has landed its biggest clearance to date, announcing today that it's entered into an agreement with Multicultural Broadcasting's WSAH New York (DMA 1).

RTV will air on the station's primary channel and will be available to cable , satellite and over-the-air viewers beginning July 1.

Re: WSAH switching to Retro TV July 1st.

That's great news. So on July 1, channel 19 (WSAH) on FiOS TV will now have Retro TV programming in Northern New Jersey and New York City areas. Is there a website for Retro TV?

I hope WSAH does something about their sound, they sound like they are in mono. No sense watching any new programming if it will continue like this!

I just checked out channel 19 (WSAH) and their sound is terrible. The audio has music playing during the informercial that I was watching but all the dialogue is missing. It's as if FiOS TV only has the channel playing in half-stereo (stereo with one track or speaker of audio missing).

Here's the funny thing. The audio problem on WSAH (channel 19) only happens on my 2 SD STBs and my digital adapter. When I tuned to channel 19 on my HD DVR with HDMI, the audio is perfect. Both music and dialogue are present and it's in stereo sound quality.

I guess I will have to report this issue to the Verizon Direct forum.

RetroTV is typically in mono (and offered as a subchannel by local OTA stations where it's offered at all). Here in Washington, DC, it's WJLA-TV/DT that offers RetroTV (subchannel 7-3).

Actually the network is full stereo, but the source material is often mono. BTSC stereo wasn't rolled out till the mid 80s so they never bothered to produce them in stereo, even though most playback formats had 2 channels starting with 1", beta and uMatic (1975ish). You'll notice many of the ads are stereo, the debt help one is definitely. I'm waiting for the later Knight Riders, Voyagers, etc. to see if they pass them in stereo.

Its offered wherever the station chooses to put it, there are many who are on the "main". There's no difference really except the number, the bitrate, audio etc can actually be BETTER than the main if setup that way. My .2 is the same rate as the .1 (9 mbps)

I just wish it was available here in the sticks. They have a lot of shows from when I was growing up.

It will be interesting to see what shows they pick for the schedule. Apparently RTV varies by market.

The new WSAH will air the RTV lineup 24/7 with Quincy, Dragnet, Alfred Hitchcock, Emergency and many more classic TV shows.
Very cool news! I thought we'd never get it, because the NYC networks have their subchannels taken for other things. I never considered a smaller broadcaster, and had no idea we got that CT channel.

The Mono audio is lousy! I hope they make it better.

I wonder if we have anyone here who actually picks this station up OTA in CT, and can compare the quality? One thing I would add is that most areas of the country on RetroTV on sub-channels, where the video/audio quality is kind of lackluster as well.

This isn't a subchannel and there is no reason for a main television station to have audio like this. Retro TV will be unwatchable if it continues. I left a message with WSAH's chief engineer. I'll let you know if he calls me back.

Wish we had it in Philly too. Thought maybe I missed something but couldn't seem to find it on our guide. I mean I would kill to see reruns of "That's Incredible"....loved that as a kid.

I got in touch with the chief engineer at WSAH, he didn't want to tell me much. He said it's the fiber feed to Verizon that's the problem and couldn't go into any detail as to a fix or anything. He must be on Verzion's payroll. Anyway, now we know it's Verizon's problem and we should all open a ticket in the Direct Forum so they hurry up and fix it.

Where do I do that?

PS: ron, I've read and I don't think WFMZ has started airing anything from RetroTV on the sub-channel.

Greg,
Right above the first thread in this TV Forum are 4 tabs, one says DSL, one says Fiber Optics, one says TV and one says Direct Forum. Click on that Direct Forum tab, start a new topic. Those are Verizon employees who answer problems. You have to also included your name, address and telephone number in your thread.

matcarl,
The audio on WSAH sounds normal tonight. I hope the PQ improves when the Retro TV starts.
Some of those infomercials are unwatchable due to the heavy digital compression.

As a kid, there was a channel in Indy that showed, Sea Hunt, Whirlybirds, Rescue 8, Highway Patrol, Ripcord, Supercar, and other shows I haven't seen since the 60s. It would be nice to see some, or all, of these again.

Supposedly it's available in Philly, via your antenna as a sub-channel to WFMZ. Only problem, isn't WFMZ in Allentown, Pa? I have a hard enough time trying to pick up stations from Philly, let alone Allentown. Yet on the Retro page it shows the station as Philadelphia.

Re: WSAH switching to Retro TV July 1st.

You should be able to receive WFMZ. They have a strong signal throughout most of the Philadelphia market. I receive it in Marlton, so I'm sure Bensalem and Mercer County will get it too.

My TiVo just recently got the listings for WFMZ-DT3 so I'm all set. The pq looks poor, and the RTV logo is annoying, but it's free - so one can't complain.

Since last night, I noticed that the audio on WSAH (channel 19) has improved to where it's audible and where both music and dialogue are together. I got a reply from Gustavo in the Verizon Direct forum but all he did was ask me about my audio connections and my set top box settings as if the problem was on my end and not on their end. I guess we are on our own when it comes to WSAH.

I have also noticed that the colors on WSAH tend to occasionally flash in and out. This problem happens on both my SD and HD boxes. I'm starting to wonder if all these problems are either WSAH's fault or perhaps a weak signal from WSAH to FiOS to all of us in NNJ and NYC.

Re: WSAH switching to Retro TV July 1st.

Roche,
Gustavo saw my post after yours and I guess now that they see two complaints he is investigating. WSAH is saying it's the fiber feed to Verizon that is the problem.

The only way to know for sure is if someone picked up the OTA feed from WSAH in Connecticut. My guess is even if they fixed the fiber feed, it still won't be a great video/audio quality. Kind of like WRNN (6) or WLNY (10).

True, the quality of the station is probably poor, but there is definitely a problem with the audio and the engineer knew about it.

Re: WSAH switching to Retro TV July 1st.

I got a call from Verizon on my open ticket in the Direct Forum. Of couse they were blaming WSAH. I told them I spoke to the chief engineer at the station and he knew of the problem and he said it was Verizon's fault. She insisted it couldn't be and I kept persisting back, she said she will investigate more, but it just looks like a lot of finger pointing right now with the customer caught in between.

mat, it's interesting that other local broadcasters' feeds are fine, but WSAH is not. Perhaps WSAH did not follow Verizon's instructions when interfacing on its end?

The video on now has is very compressed and the video keeps getting hits like bad tracking on a beta tape.
The audio might be a little lower then other channels but sounds clean.
In the past the audio has been very low.

I agree with icemannyr1's description of both the video and audio on WSAH (channel 19). I noticed that the video has flashes or "hits" as icemannyr had called it while the audio is a bit lower than other channels but the sound has improved.

With the network primetime shows in reruns this summer, I was planning to catch up on some old favorites on the American Life Network.

But, since some religious outfit bought the network, their schedule has been pared of most such shows.

And, now that Verizon doesn't seem interested in us using streaming vidoe, via the Media Manager, to watch TV shows from the internet, perhaps they could find a way to add Retro TV to their lineup.

Sure would be a nice addition.

I just tuned in to channel 19 (WSAH) at 5:30 AM and I got the "This channel is currently unavailable" screen. Perhaps either WSAH or Verizon is working on the problem. At the Verizon Direct forum, Gustavo wanted me to check the SNR inband status on channel 19 but since the channel was out, I was unable to do so.

Listening to the audio with my tuner card on the PC, the audio is much louder on the left channel then the right channel.
The audio left and right balance is way off but the audio quality is better then Comedy Central.

Well I checked WSAH last night and the audio is back to being inaudible and low. I checked it again this morning and it's still the same. Somebody's messing up big time here. It's either WSAH or Verizon. I'll report this update to Gustavo in the Verizon Direct forum.

Yes, keep writing Gustavo, Roche. I have a ticket open also. A few weeks ago it seemed the audio was more dominant in the right channel, now it's more dominant in the left, it's all out of balance, what a mess!

At 7AM it went into a continuous loop of the RTN logo. I had to leave for work. The audio is even worse than it has been and even the picture looks washed out now, everything is white! What a waste of a channel!

Gustavo from the Verizon Direct forum recently replied to me about the audio problems on WSAH (channel 19) and he told me that yes there was low audio on that channel but it is coming from the station and that there is nothing that Verizon can do to alter the audio. He also told me that the audio would sound better on HD STBs and DVRs compared to SD STBs and DVRs. Right now, the sound is audible on my HD DVR but is barely audible on my 2 SD STBs and my digital adapter.

As for RTN on WSAH, all I see are infomercials as well.

The audio is out of phase but a normal volume with my PC tuner card and using the rca or digital audio out of the HD and SD STB's.

On the coax out of STB's the audio is low and distorted.
