Re: WSAH switching to Retro TV July 1st.

Hi Ron_WSAH. I have been contacting VZ_Gustavo in the Direct forum about the audio and video issues with WSAH (channel 19) but he keeps insisting that it's a station problem and that there's nothing Verizon can do about it. It's a shame. I still find it weird that my HD DVR can pick up the audio well without having to raise the volume of my HDTV. That's the only TV set I can watch WSAH on without all the audio issues.

The station was completely black last evening, no video, no audio.

We had a receiver failure last night, caused by the RTV downlink. The DVB-S2 stream got flaky and the receiver finally gave up and quit. Programming was restored at 22:20 after rebooting the receiver.

RTV is working on this issue with the manufacturer.

This is due to the fact that most STBs put out a MONO RF feed and when out-of-phase audio is mono-mixed, it cancels. All you end up hearing is little differences in level and phase between channels (no two audio channels are -exactly- the same, then add "joint-stereo" into the equation).

The HD boxes, or the AV jacks will sound OK, but the stereo image will be off to the sides and not in the center like you're used to. This can be very unnerving and the untrained ear just finds it confusing and enraging.

Yup, and miswiring (before analog to digital conversion) is the culprit.
Comcast of Arlington would do this on their RF modulators from time to time.
They might wire up the left channel positive-positive, negative-negative, ground-ground,
while wiring up the right channel positive-negative, negative-positive, ground-ground.

Since analog audio connections on broadcast equipment (routers, encoders, etc) is usually terminal screws or phoenix connectors where you work with actual bare wiring instead of jacks and plugs, it is actually a very easy mistake to make if you're not careful.

Oh well, if it doesn't get fixed by the new format, then I'm not watching it. He doesn't care, Verizon doesn't care, then neither do I. Shameful.
I think you're over reacting. It's really not that bad. Not ideal, but certainly not unwatchable. I can deal with it.
(yes, I know I am replying to an old post)
Actually, out of phase audio is indeed a big deal. If you listen in stereo, the imaging will be way off. If you listen in mono (which some people still do), you basically got a karaoke machine. If you listen in Dolby Surround, all the dialog (and everything else that's equal on left and right) will be sent to the rear speakers.

I'm no expert but it sounds pretty good to me now.

Now, if only the guide data was correct.

What schedule is WSAH following? Even the online PDF for their affiliate listing isn't even close to be correct.

I set my DVR for Emergency at 1PM and wound up with an hour long infomercial. I set the DVR for the Hardy Boys last night and Airwolf was on instead.

What good is any of this of no one knows what's on?

Nice! Somehow, this slipped under my radar. It's showing up as "Gems TV" in the guide, but it always seems to take Verizon a few days/weeks to properly update their guide when new channels are added, so no biggie.

I can't remember the last time I watched an episode of "Ironside". Very cool!

According to someone at Verizon, the sound seems to have finally been fixed by WSAH

Like either side at this point is going to admit to being at fault

The audio watching on a regular TV from the Coax in is normal now and sounds fine on my qam tuner.
Thanks to whoever fixed it.
Now we just need a link to the schedule.
The RTV website links to the national schedule pdf.

I wanted to add an EAS Weather Alert for May, 25th 2009 has been suck scrolling on the channel since 10:20pm.

Quincy was ok but Magnum P.I. looks like it's running at the wrong frame rate.
It's hard to explain but I believe Magnum P.I. was recorded on film but it does not have that film frame rate look and the video is not clean when the camera pans left to right or right to left.
