Re: Going to check out Palm Pre in person tomorrow

I'm due for an upgrade after pummeling my trusty LG for two years. The Pre looks interesting...please report back.

I'll post something tomorrow after I check the device out.

Check your sources. Yes it does do landscape .
»reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/pal···473.html
The Pre's display has a built-in accelerometer so the screen orientation will automatically change from portrait to landscape mode when viewing photos, videos, and Web pages. The accelerometer is fast and changes pages without any lag. There's also a proximity sensor, which will automatically turn off the display when you lift the smartphone to your ear for a phone call.
I know you just bought an iphone »So... iHave my own iPhone now.... .
But please don't turn this in to an iPhone vs Pre religious war. The iPhone is a good smartphone. The Pre may be one too.

And the Pre does something the iPhone will never do...work on Sprint.

I tried one out this morning and I found it lived up to the reviews I have read online. Voice quality on calls was good. Web access was quick and easily switched between portrait & landscape mode. Videos & photos looked very sharp and the photo I took with the camera was very sharp. The keyboard is a little small, but usable unless you have very big hands. I paired my bluetooth headset with the Pre and that went very easily. You can zoom in and out using the same method as the iPhone by pinching your fingers together or apart on the touch screen. I also was able to play music; surf the web; and have the camera operational all at the same time, switching between them by sweeping a finger left or right on the touch screen.

The phone was lighter than an iPhone, but didn't to me feel cheap like some reviewers thought. And it easily fits in a pocket without weighing it down. The touchscreen does tend to pickup smudges quickly from oil on your fingers, but a quick swipe on a shirt or with a handkerchief clears it.

Overall, I thought it matches up nicely with the existing 3G iPhone. I'll wait to see what the new iPhone announces soon before I make up my mind.

If you haven't done so already, check out signal quality from the carriers associated with your phones.

I've had Verizon, AT&T and Sprint within the last year. Of the 3, Sprint was the only one that gave me a usable signal at the 5 or 6 locations I visit most. All of them gave me good 3G service in most locations, just not at my most visited locations.

18 months ago I was set to get a blackberry until I got a hold of a pearl and a world edition and tried to type on both of them. That was the end of BBs for me. I support them for companies but I couldn't own one.

I finally settled on an AT&T Tilt. I liked it and their service. I only switched over to a Sprint Touch Pro, just because my company changed wireless providers.

It turned out to be a good move. My Touch Pro is terrific (once I added a cooked rom) and the Sprint service is much better in what had traditionally been problem spots.

More evidence that YMMV.

Thanks for info. I have a Kindle, which uses Sprint's network, and I find that signal strength has been good in all the areas I frequent most often. A friend has an AT&T phone and his has been good also. But coverage is definitely a key part of the evaluation.

how is the microphone for the voice calls? i've noticed a bad trend with a lot of the "fullscreen" touchscreen phones lately (storm, iphone, even some of the lg's from verizon) that they tend to sound watery or pick up a lot of background noise (and i've tried from several of my phones that have never had that issue when calling traditional "flip" style handsets). while i am no longer with sprint (workphone was moved to att), i'm curious to see if this was just an isolated incident to the few people that i call on a regular basis or if it is something larger...

When I tried it out in the store I only called 1 person. They said it sounded OK to them. But that isn't a real test. You would have to get comments from someone who actually bought one. I am waiting until reviews are in on new iPhone and the new iPhone OS 3.0 before I make up my mind on the Pre or the iPhone.

understood. some co-workers have iphones (some edge-only, some 3g), my brother in law has a blackberry storm and my wife has the lg dare from verizon. all three of those phones sound echo-y and pick up a lot of ambient noise. i thought it could have been something with the design the phone has to fit...

i as well am waiting for the iphone 3.0 launch. if its good enough, i may buy the phone outright and replace my blackjack ii with it, since we use a web-based content hosting solution for a lot of our internal documentation and said portal can be accessed using the iphone.

appreciate the input...

Also, I use a bluetooth headset with my current Verizon LG phone(not a smartphone) and plan on using that headset with either the Pre or iPhone. So the builtin microphone probably won't be a determining factor for me.
