Moon people take some good pics, please

I will not bother to post the pics of the moon that I got, when it was not dark yet, with my point and shoot camera. Full Strawberry Moon on Sunday, 8 June.

I guess it's so beautiful because we are approaching the summer solstice

Here are few I took a while ago. Haven't been shooting the moon too much as I am targeting deeper dimmer objects now.

The reason for the lack of EXIF is the processing.
All the images were taken with a Nikon D-40 through my 8" F-10 telescope. The "close" and "closer" images were taken with an f-6.3 focal reducer installed between the scope and camera. The "closest" was straight F-10 (2000mm).
There were a number of shots taken, generally about 20 to 30 images at about 1/6th second shutter speed at ISO 200. . The images are stacked in a program called Registax which aligns them and stacks them on top of each other. The stacking helps increase the signal to noise ratio and will also help with sharpness. Then the final image is adjusted in Photoshop. The above image is a comparison between a single shot and a bunch of shots stacked.

Your welcome Marti!
I should get out there when the moon is out and take some more. I have been wanting to do a large mosaic of a full moon.

Actually, thank you! I've been wanting to do this for a while and you gave me that extra bit of motivation that I needed.

Really nice photos here! TheHarvester See Profile, your web site ( »mbsastronomy.com/ ) is excellent. It's nice to see the subject presented in a manner that ordinary people can understand, and lots of equipment and howtos to browse.

You should get in touch with NoelC See Profile and compare notes

Re: Moon people take some good pics, please

Thanks EGeezer See Profile. I can't take much credit for the site. Most of it was done by Jamie (fuadramsey). It's only been up a short time but we hope to get it much better yet still be somewhat basic.

What you really mean by "compare notes" is receive some tips . He is in a league well above us, but I do hope to some day be tugging at his shirt tail. I do know I can use some of his knowledge on post processing.

My first moon shot with this camera, rather heavily cropped... used my old 70-210/4 plus 2xTC. Handheld, of course... I can't be bothered with tripods.

Somewhere, I have a really old Bushnell monocular with M42 mount... gives something like 1200mm at f16 fixed, IIRC. I'll try that tomorrow.

NIKON D60
300mm 1/200th -1.6ev F16 ISO100

(Full) Corn Moon
Finally! Had the right time, location, and perfectly clear sky. Shot from my 2nd story window looking west (early AM). I've got a lot of high trees on my property and took a bunch of shots until it went out of view behind the trees.

Nikon D60, Sigma 70 - 300 mm APO f/5.6 macro zoom. Manual exposure, remote release, tripod. Processed in GIMP - cropped with brightness-contrast to bring out the details. Original was 3900 x 2613, cropped is 768 x 534 (about 4x magnification). I didn't notice the "-1.6ev" until later. Hope that doesn't affect the exposure in manual mode(?).

The camera is maxed out in terms of sensitivity. I hit the noise floor as seen by the red/blue (mainly red) coloration.

This zoom is very tricky to focus, as infinity as not at the end of focus ring travel. I stopped down in the hope of getting the details. The dynamic range of RAW mode made all the difference.

I tried higher shutter speeds / lower f-stops and this is the best I could get. This makes one appreciate those fixed 400mm+ focal length lenses.

This is an old one I did some time ago, just a single image with a D40. I should do some more now that I've got a D90.
