join:2008-03-28 | reply to mod_wastrel I finally noticed that there's a totally useless RSS link on postlist, so I got rid of it:
a[href$="postlist.xml"] { display: none !important; }
Now I have room to spare for even the largest popup. (:D) |

2 edits | reply to jmorlan I was playing around a bit with the popup code and came up with this (for Stylish)... widens the window (which you can adjust as much as you like), making it use less "vertical space": Works for most/all (?) similar forum popups, too. BTW, obviously you can change the font, colors, etc. as you wish to make it suit your tastes. Playing with it some:

| reply to jmorlan Ha! It took me reading this entire thread to figure out what you were complaining about ....that is until I realized you meant those extradinarily annoying popups that assume you don't want read the thread but just the dumb popup. I mean read the thread or don't...but why read a popup to decide if you want to read the thread? The popup usually in no way lets you know if you want to read the thread. So, as soon as this site came up with such a dumb idea, I killed it. I did the same on any site I found with a preview. It is like seeing a trailer for a movie...worthless waste of my time...go to the movie or don't. Plus, why ruin the thread with a preview?
So, since this doesn't affect me I won't vote. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

4 edits | I usually find the snippets in the popup--sometimes with ten times as much text as the subject--quite useful in deciding whether I want to read further in the thread; I mean, you actually are reading the beginning of the thread, less some formatting--click through to continue reading, or don't... I often don't, though I might go back to it later when I have more time; sometimes it's just a matter of now versus later, not now or never. TEHO (Movie trailers on the other hand almost always convince me accurately one way or the other whether a movie is worth a couple hours out of my life--typically not.)
Of course, the "complaint" here is really about the failure to format properly regarding the location of the popup. With just a couple more lines of code in their script, BBR could avoid the problem entirely by having the popup auto-magically position itself so that it doesn't overflow the window display.
Edit: work-around (aka stupid web trick) for "hidden" popup... right-click on the link (to open the popup), then alt-tab (or ctrl-tab) to another window (tab) such that the cursor/pointer is no longer on the BBR page, move the cursor off to the side so it won't be on the BBR page when you alt-tab back to it, then alt-tab back to it, move the cursor/pointer back over the page (avoiding links), scroll the page down, and the popup should be visible. Works on Windows, and I'll presume it works elsewhere, too (though I'll leave it to someone else to verify). Now, would I ever use this little "trick"? No... but it's interesting anyway. |

2 edits | If nothing else, you can customize how the popup looks to make it more "readable" for you:
 with the default site theme
And using the image from the site's banner (under the breadcrumbs) to give it a gradient, you get:
 with gradient image
The code (color corrected), if you want it:
OK... that's it. |

There is a greasemonkey (firefox extension) script that stops this floating around the forums.
I will sign, what the heck.

| reply to jmorlan Just remove the pop-up alltogether. On firefox, if you right click on a subject with a goal of opening it in a new tab, there is "flashing" involved and it is very annoying to see that pop-=up conflict with the pop up that firefox opens to let you select "open in new tab". |

jfmezei Premium join:2007-01-03 Beaconsfield, QC | Topic previews have been "off" for me for a long time. However, this does not affect the "most people are currently reading" lines at bottom of page, those pop-ups still show up. |

1 edit | Oh, I didn't know that; I guess that's a "glitch" in the system (?). Well, you can turn them off with this (Stylish or userContent):
Edit: It may not be your preferred method, but when I want to open a link in a new tab, I just hold down the Ctrl key when clicking; I used to do the right-click to get the context menu and select that item, but the Ctrl key is just faster (though it does take two hands--which is why you might not prefer it). |
