[Other] For Golfers

I'm not a golfer but thought for those here who are you might enjoy looking at these photos of The Black Course at Bethpage State Park.

Any of you ever play here?

Re: [Other] For Golfers

As I understand it, the course doesnt accept tee times and is first come first served. And just to be able to play people will camp out in their cars the night before. It must be something special.

Re: [Other] For Golfers

I'm not a golfer, but from watching the 2002 Open, the Black Course is phenomenally difficult. It's unlike any course I've ever seen. The fairways can be very narrow, with trees in the most challenging of places, and huge valleys. The technical difficulty of the course makes it a joy to watch professionals take on, and it made you appreciate so much more how good Tiger is when he won in 2002. The New York crowd also brought an extra enthusiasm and energy to the crowd that some might look at as disruptive, but to many it was almost welcome. The 2002 Open was one of the most unique tournaments in history, and I hope the 2009 Open is similar.

One of the other things that makes it so special is that it's a truly public course. There are no restrictions as to who can play it, and is as affordable and accessible as any course gets. No other major tournament has been played on a truly public course. The lines start the night before, and they camp out in their cars, like if you were waiting for concert tickets or something. I think an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond (a show I despise) was about this. To have a major PGA event on the Black really helps to blur the line a little between the elitism of the PGA and the average guy going out with his buddies to shoot 18, although there is a sign warning you how incredibly difficult the Black is to play. There's three other courses at Bethpage State Park that are less difficult.

Believe it or not a friend of mine caddied there for a while (not for tournaments but public play). He said you can't believe how long/tough it is. From the tips its downright ridiculous apparently. I'd love to play there sometime, but you gotta be the picture of patience. I think you're lookin at at least 6 hours, most likely more. That would drive me insane.

I live very close to the course. I've played the Black only once. I'm a not that good of a golfer at all (upper 90s counting score legitimately). It was a brutal experience. My forearms were killing me by the end of the round from hitting out of all of the thick rough.

It's a beautiful course though. I particularly like the view of the par 3 17th. It's a 2 tier green and can lend itself to some interesting pin placements and the Par 4 15th with a tiny green surrounded by traps. Last time the 15th played as one of the hardest US Open holes ever.

On thing that I thought was great in 2002 is they really didn't have to "game" the course to make it difficult. They had US Open rough and tough pin placements, but they didn't have to make the greens like concrete to have ridiculous pin placements to keep the scores up, like they have to at some courses. They just played the course pretty much "straight up". I think the players really appreciated that. There was one hole where, I think on a day or 2 that there was some rain, a good many players had trouble reaching the fairway. I'm sure they'll have that corrected this year.

I have tickets on Friday that week, so I'm pretty excited.

Also, they do have a reservation system for the Black course for many years now. I think they do still hold some open slots every day for walk ups though.

For NYS residents, I think the fee is still under $40 for a round. Clearly the best bargain in all of golf.

I don't think you are looking at 6 hour rounds though. Probably closer to 4.5 hour rounds. Most people who play the black, know how to keep the pace of their play up.

Also, at the same complex, there are 4 other 18 hole courses, one of which, in particular, is also a very good course. I've played 6 hour rounds on the other courses though. Being public courses, there really are no rangers or anything pushing people's pace along and there are certainly a good many hackers out there every day.

Very exciting around here. I drove by a couple of tiles today and there was a lot of activity at the course. I was trying to see if the foursome with Jordan and Timberlake were playing and how to watch that, but I didn't see anything.

Also, what a pita to get to thecourse now to the merchandise tent. You have to park a couple miles away and then they bus you over to the retail area. I got to the parking lot and it was packed just to get into the parking lot. I only had my lunch time, so I just turned around.

I was able to bike all around the complex today. It looks amazing. There are workers carting things around, painting things and prepping things all over the place.

Here are some pictures from off of Round Swamp Road, which runs through the course.

The merchandise tent is the size of a Sports Authority. ESPN Radio's Brandon Tierney is there doing his show now. I won an ESPN Radio T-Shirt for answering a few Mets trivia questions

I doubt I could get through on a bike starting Monday. The road will be closed, probably to bikers too.

I do have tickets for Friday, so I'm really looking forward to that. No cameras or cell phone though, so no pictures.

Why no pictures at all? How is one to have memories of attending the event? I can understand no flash photos but none at all I have to question.

As for your tickets for Friday may I ask how much they cost you? I ask because a woman who I have known my entire life called me earlier in the week and asked me if I knew of anyone that would be interested in her tickets. Years back I was involved in concert tickets/promotions and she remembered that so thought I would be a good one to ask. She is elderly now and splits her time between here where I am on Long Island and Florida. Her career was as an executive secretary at Grumman when they had their Calverton plant in operation.

She told me every single year she is put in a lottery for tickets and ended up getting 4 what she called packages...All days and practice days and playoffs if necessary. She is going one day and wanted to sell the other days for $100.00 which she said is face value or below ( can't remember right now ) and practice days were I believe she said $40.00...When I asked her about parking she said parking was not included in any of the tickets/packages she had.

Since I'm not a golfer I gave her the phone number of a friend who plays often with other friends so I guess he bought them as I have not heard back from her. So I'm just curious as to what you paid for your day.

Because the "click" of the camera causes a player to flinch during the swing causing bad things.

It's extremely disrupting while in perfect silence to hear a click at the bottom of the swing at impact.

Players tolerate it in practice rounds but even then if you get them in mid swing they will give you the evil eye. In tournament play, if professional photographers with media credentials do it mid swing they will be escorted out. Tiger's caddie has went so far as taking a camera from someone and breaking it. After the player has made contact with the ball and has followed through into his finish is the accepted time to snap a pic during a tournament for the pro photogs.

Yeah but with digital cameras many have no click or sound at all. I think that some time soon this practice should be revisited and if you can demonstrate a silent operation camera it should be allowed.

Not going to happen. Cellphones can be made silent but there is always dumbasses with no consideration

"Tiger Woods had two incidents with fans and their cameras last year. An early click cost Woods a chance of going bogey-free over 72 holes when he won the World Golf Championship in Ireland; and at the Skins Game, Woods flinched during his swing when a camera clicked behind him (his caddie, Steve Williams, took the camera from the offending fan and tossed it in a nearby pond).

Yet Combs feels cellphones are the biggest problem. Cellphones are prohibited from tournament courses, but there always seems to be a few fans who sneak them in. Marshals only become aware of their presence when they ring -- hopefully, not during someone's backswing. "

"Q. Yesterday you pushed a lot of shots. Did you work out something overnight?

TIGER WOODS: Yesterday I was flinching all the time, all the cameras were going off in my downswing. I didn't have that problem today, which was nice, and I can go ahead and actually play a little bit of golf."

This is just allowing cameras with media credentials. Imagine if you allow 60,000 people to carry a camera during a tournament. It would be almost unplayable.

Jordan is supposedly a single digit handicap at Medinah and shoots 86? I'd bet everything I own I can beat Jordan on any course he chooses. I know this course is hard but cmon Rothlesburger shoots 81 and only plays 3 or 4 months out of the year? A decent player could break 80 there.

Practice rounds Mon, Tue and Wed are $40 each. Championship rounds Thur, Fri, Sat and Sun are $100 each.

Package for all 7 days is $400 each.

I don't think there was any handling fee.

Tickets appear to be going for less then face value right now on Stubhub as the event is currently not sold out.

As of this morning, I know you could walk right up to the course and buy tickets directly from the USGA.

Cameras are allowed for the practice rounds, not for the championship rounds. I guess if you want memories or pictures of the course, go Mon-Wed.

I did receive a parking pass for each day's tickets I had (I sold my Sunday tickets). 7 years ago, they wanted me to park down at the beach about 20 minutes away and then be bused back. I would up just walking. This year, I got a parking pass at a college that's about 5 minutes away (I see they still have the beach parking, but maybe they gave only local residents the nearby parking passes). With the amount of time it'll take to get a bus at the parking area, it'll still be the better plan to just walk.

Fans who attended a soggy and rain-shortened U.S. Open first round at Bethpage Black Thursday won't be happy when they read this:

Thursday tickets will not be refunded or exchanged. Play will resume Friday at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. Only Friday tickets will be accepted.

( some interesting reader comments at end of page...here is the 1st one)

USGA talks about how wonderful the Bethpage Opens have been for creating goodwill and bringing golf to the "common people" This is not the way to foster goodwill with those fans! They kept everyone hanging for 4 hours at Bethpage in the soaking rain, while the only thing the fans could do was spend money at the concession or merchandise tent. So the USGA fills their pockets even more, and thousands of water-logged ticketholders are now out of luck. Surely the golf course can hold more people! If it's just a matter of security, or lack of buses from Jones Beach, they should have thought of better contingency plans.

Im not surprised about the no-refund policy. That's just the way the gol world is, unfortunately. And in their defense, they do have to keep up with the costs.

What's most unfortunate is how the constant rain is going to ruin what's an absolutely fun place to watch a major tournament. A lot of people are going to miss or be soured on what would have been a phenomenal experience like none other. I don't care where they have the Open and who watches it, it don't get any better than watching one at the Black.

Here's an update on the no refund story...seems for what little some saw it doesn't seem fair. With more rain in the forecast they just might reverse their no refund or exchange policy.

Fans incensed over U.S. Open's no-refund policy

The People's Open?

Not according to golf fans incensed about the U.S. Open's no-refund policy for Thursday's rain-shortened opening day.

U.S. Golf Association officials said the 3½ hours of golf played on Bethpage Black Thursday were enough to prompt its no-refund policy. The policy is similar to that of comparable tennis and golf tournaments, such as Wimbledon and the British Open, officials said.

"We appreciate the disappointment of the fans. We are also disappointed," said Rand Jerris, a spokesman for the USGA. "There was a feeling that an adequate amount of play was offered."

But few golf fans Thursday actually saw 3½ hours of play, which started at 7 a.m.

"I just think the whole thing stinks, especially considering this is a public golf course owned by the state," said Ralph Giardina, 68, a former Nassau County police captain who paid $200 for tickets Thursday for himself and his wife. They saw a total of three shots on hole No. 18 before play was suspended at about 10:30 a.m.

"They didn't play even close to 25 percent of the golf that was supposed to be played today, and my wife and I paid $200. There's something not right about that," said Giardina, of Farmingdale.

Nick Tarallo, 57, of upstate Bedford, arrived at Bethpage Black around 8:45 a.m. with his two brothers-in-law and a nephew, hoping to see Tiger Woods, Geoff Ogilvy and Phil Mickelson. After getting breakfast and situating themselves on the course, they witnessed a total of six shots - $100 a shot, Tarallo noted. Mickelson never teed off.

"I would like very much for them to refund the money," Tarallo said, noting he would also accept a ticket for this weekend's play.

Jerris said giving Thursday's ticket holders access to this weekend's action would flood Bethpage Black with more people than it can handle.

Fans said they understood the logistics were complicated. But that's not their problem, they said.

"They should have had some kind of accommodation for this kind of a day," said Sid Silverman, 55, of Merrick, who paid $150 a ticket for what he called a "disastrous day."

Even politicians expressed anger, with Rep. Steve Israel calling on the USGA to issue refunds.

Officials said they could not estimate the cost of refunding tickets, but considering that about 42,500 tickets were sold at prices of $100 or $150 for Thursday's round, a rough estimate would be about $5 million.

The refund will never happen. With all the rain scheduled to come, theyll play Monday. Thursday people truly make out as they thought they would see first round action, and theyll wind up seeing the final putt. Sunday people will get fucked because they wont see the final putt. Im sure the Thurs tickets are on eBay right now for astronomical prices.

Had a great day at the Open today.

Got out there about 8:15am and stayed until about 7pm.

We saw Tiger double the 15th from the Grandstand, saw Phil a few times and got a real nice close up of Villegas hitting from way off the fairway off the mud on the 15th.

Weather was amazing today

I wonder if I could secure tickets for Monday. I can't imagine they are going for that much. Only way to really get the tickets to someone is via pickup. Anyone who has the Monday tickets (people who buy the full package also have Monday tickets already) and can't go are probably just looking to dump them.

U.S. Open fans heckle Tiger Woods

Beer-sodden fans and rain combined for an ugly finish to a long day of golf yesterday, with Tiger Woods and other golfers subjected to drunken heckling as the action at Bethpage Black came to a close.

At 6:42 p.m., dozens of drunken spectators at Hole 10 taunted Woods as he prepared to start his third round in the rain.

"We're on Long Island, baby, where men are men!" one fan yelled. "Put that umbrella down!"

The taunts were mixed with cheers from the majority of the crowd.

Woods did not respond to the people who were heckling him but tried to quiet the crowd with a "sshh" hand gesture, putting his finger to his lips, as golfers prepared to tee off on the adjacent 12th tee.

"Suck it up, you've got your own video game!" someone shouted at Woods.

Some fans, apparently disgusted by the hecklers' behavior, walked away from the hole. Others told the vocal contingent to quiet down, which had no effect on the verbal abuse.

Minutes later, a group of fans greeted Fred Funk at the 10th hole by shouting his last name as an obscenity.

A little earlier, drunken fans at the seventh hole shouted at golfers, "This Bud's for you!" On the ninth fairway, drunks called out "you suck" to players while spectators on the other side booed the hecklers.

Concession stands scattered across the course - including the one near the 10th hole - don't start selling beer until 11 a.m., yet a line already had formed in front of the taps between the 16th and 17th holes well before that. But the late- morning scene was peaceful, giving little indication of what would happen later elsewhere on the course.

Many beer-drinkers Saturday at Bethpage Black were there simply to enjoy the scene.

John O'Shea, John McQue and Cronan Ryan sat on a hillside overlooking Hole 17, leaning back on their elbows and taking slow sips of Budweiser.

"We just had to rest a while to get some beer in us," said O'Shea, 22, of Manhattan.

"We just needed to relax," added McQue, 28, of Sunnyside.

Very disappointing to hear. That's certainly not going to help our chances of getting another one of these.

When I was there from morning until evening on Friday, I'd have to say there was a definite difference in the crowd once play restarted around 5pm. I was on the hill on the 2nd and the crowd had the wave going and was much more vocal. But, I didn't hear anything that wouldn't be acceptable. Then as I was leaving, I stopped around the 15th fairway and there were drunk girl with a loud piercing voice talking to some guy next to her and the marshall had a pretty tough time keeping her quiet when the golfers were coming up, but again, that's nothing like this above article.

Oh trust me, Bethpage is going to remain on the regular rotation for awhile. Even before the first tee shot in 2002, they already knew it was going to land here in 2009 (my old man got this from an insider). Bethpage makes them a SHITLOAD of cash, and holding this on a public course is tremendous PR for them.

I agree. I like Tiger, but the announcers are sounding just plain ridiculous. As he tees off on #1, I hear "He's thinking '62', '63', '64'....". Then he proceeds to pull it into the trees on the left. Uh.... let's make that "72, 73, 74..."

the coverage of this is just a tiger suck ass feast....

they are still talking about him coming back from like 8-10 strokes....like its acutally going to happen
Not being a golfer or having any real interest in it I haven't watched any of it but I do check Newsday.Com a couple times a day to see what is happening. I tell ya, if I didn't know any better and just went by what Newsday says I would think that there are only 3 players in the U.S. Open..Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and every so often they mention a guy by the name of Ricky Barnes.

I feel bad for the other golfers competing and I hope TV is at least talking about them from time to time. The screenshot I posted is from approx 9PM E.S.T. tonight ( Sunday ) It seems to be all about those 2 ....at least at Newsday.

I thought it was funny how they kept coverage the extra 5 minutes to show him finish that hole.

What's really the point?

I don't know if it's NBC's fault though. The people watching clearly want to see Tiger. When he was out, the ratings absolutely tanked. They probably get better ratings showing Tiger's shots 8 back of the lead then showing the leaders themselves.

Re: [Other] For Golfers

For you and the others here who are following closely and with play scheduled to resume tomorrow, Monday, who do you predict will win it?

I think Glover is going to win it.

Anyone see anywhere what time the gates open tomorrow?

I think we are going to try to get there around 7:45 or 8 and attempt to park ourselves in the 17th or 15th grandstand for the round.

If you are up high on the 17th grandstand that's on the left side of the green, you can see the entire 18th fairway and even have a clear shot of the green.

I don't know if that plan is optimistic, as I bet everyone has the same plan.

The 127 yard 14th also looks like a lot of fun with the pin placement making for some interesting tee shots and putts.

1 Vote for Glover is in.

I just checked Newsday and they just say play will resume at 9 AM tomorrow but nowhere did I see any mention regarding what time the gates open.

I assume gates will be open at 6 AM tomorrow morning.
__________

Championship Rounds 3 and 4

The first starting time will be determined by the number of players who make the “cut” at the conclusion of the second round (60 players with the lowest scores including ties plus any player within 10 strokes of the lead). Generally, the first pairing begins play from the first tee between 8-8:30 a.m.; the last pairing for both days will start play from the first tee at approximately 2:50 p.m.
Saturday, June 20 (third round) — (Gates open – 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
Sunday, June 21 (fourth round) — (Gates open – 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Playoff

If there is a tie for the lead at the end of 72 holes, an 18-hole playoff will be held on Monday, June 22. The playoff will begin at approximately noon and finish at approximately 4 p.m. Gates will open at 9:30 a.m.

Congratulations on picking the winner!

Just checked Newsday at 1:34 PM and you can see in the screenshot who is taking up most of the page and only if you look over to the upper far right do they say Lucas Glover wins it. I would think his picture would be taking up most of the page.

It's all about what sells. When Greg Norman beefed his tournaments, he's the one who got the coverage, not the winner.

Nobody beyond his friends and family gives a flying shit about Lucas Glover. He's a golfing nobody.

He's the winner of the 2009 U.S. Open however, and that will remain in the history books forever.
So congratulations to him.

Phil Mickelson is a star, is extremely well liked by fans (especially those in New York), is trying to add a U.S. Open to his resume of major wins, and brings along the drama story of his wife currently battling breast cancer.

This is why he's on the front page and Lucas Glover is not.

Lucas Glover is highly likely to join the ranks of players like Orville Moody and Ben Curtis-- those who have long careers yet rarely win anything, and just so happened to catch lightning in a bottle once in their life.

If he starts winning tournaments left and right over the next few years (and maybe having a pissing contest or two with Tiger Woods wouldn't hurt), Newsday will be more than happy to put his picture on the front page of the sports section at every opportunity, and golf fans will start caring about whether or not he's winning or contending.

Where are you getting that 6am guess from? I did see what you found, but that's 9:30 for noon. I don't know if you could correlate that to 6am for 9am.

Well, either way, I'm not getting up that early. I'm hopeful, I'll find somewhere decent to sit if I get there by 7:45 or so.

Re: [Other] For Golfers

Well if the players are to resume at 9 AM tomorrow I imagine the gate open time will continue to be 6 AM.

The playoff schedule posted above says the gates will open at 9:30 but that is with a resume starting playing time of noon.

Just arrive at 7:30 and you'll be fine.

wow this guy yesterday was 4 inches from a hole in 1 and they did not even show a replay....but the next normal put for tiger we got 2 replays.

sad....

they are building this guy up, if they would show and harp up some interest in some other players maybe ratings would not suck if tiger and micky were out of it...

Seems to be the only thing you are interested in talking about. Dang Phil gets an eagle to tie for the lead and finally some drama here (even if Glover and Barns have to drop 8 strokes between them to get to this point). Lots of story here besides Tiger although to be fair he is what the advertisers are buying.

Yeah, I agree with that. Some of the "lesser" golfers who should get more coverage today will be golfers who, through recognition over time, become the ones who get more ratings for golf events in the future.

Had great seats at the 18th Green today. We got there at about 7:45a just before things started to fill up.

AMEX gives out little radios to cardmembers so you can hear the broadcast and know what's going on around the course.

The whole gallery got real excited when Phil got that Eagle. It's too bad that it didn't come down to a crucial shot on 18 though, but it was really great seeing the end of the tournament.

No, it's a big PITA to get there by car. You have to park about 2 miles away and then they shuttle you over. I tried to go the Friday before the tournament and the parking lot was so backed up. Between parking and the shuttle, it could have been an hour round trip, easily.

I might see what makes it over to the pro shop sometime this weekend.

I'm thinking that merchandise belongs to the USGA and they'll take it back and sell it some other way.

The pro shop has had Bethpage 2009 stuff for years now, so I'm sure I can get stuff there at a discount soon.

Here's a pic from Newsday.com of the 18th Green Gallery on Monday. We were somewhere in the black rectangle that I drew.

Many players tossed balls up into the crowd, so that was fun. A couple of close ones, but nothing right at me. No, neither Tiger or Phil did. Some players, I think, didn't figure out that the crowd was yelling for the ball. Some probably didn't want to give it up and some tossed a ball or 2 up.
