Don't consider Australia a Democracy!

Australia is more like Socialist State. I just learned some important facts about Australia.

1) All land is owned by the government and is rented to property owners.

2) If a person applies for Australian citizenship and transfers their life savings into the country the government limits the amount of money they can transfer back out if they are dissatisfied with what they find there and decide to return to their country of origin.

I ran into a couple that thought they wanted to become Australian Citizens. Things were fine when they arrived. When they found they did not like the government policies and decided to go back to the USA they were told they could leave but must leave their money in Australia in an Australian Bank.

Why would one expect a government with those policies to allow an open Internet. The Australian government wants to maintain the outer limits of government control by controlling all that is seen and heard on the Internet in Australia.

We've effectively got the same thing here. Try not paying your property taxes (aka "land rent") and see how long the government waits before you are removed from the property.

Again, see how fast and easily mere citizens can transfer money out of this country.

Where'd you read that?

My understanding is Australia has "Freehold" (private land) and "Crown lands" (Public lands.)

Yes, it is possible in Australia for some land to be privately owned leased Crown land. But this isn't all of it. It's only a small part of it. Most land is privately owned.

Or so I understand.

Hey KrK; thanks for a bit of support.

The bulk of the land mass of the continent is freehold. Only The Australian Capitol Territory (Canberra the seat of Government) and some other designated lands are "Crown" land such as Defence bases.

For 99.9 percent of us when we buy a block of land it's ours, NOT leased. We can buy and sell as we see fit.

And as far as Democracy goes, I'll take our version above any other on the face of this globe. England is tottering in a swill of political corruption that would never be tolerated here; Europe is a mess politically.

The African continent and South America I just can't fathom the depth of corruption and the grinding poverty when there's no need for it.

I'm not keen on the Parliamentary process, or the gun control, of Oz.

NormanS; not disagreeing with you really, but as I see it my comments would be as follows;

Gun Control First.

Can, I admit be a right pain sometimes. But as a Pistol and Rifle Club Armourer (Gun Dealer), Sports Pistol Coach, and Range Safety Officer I can say with some confidence that my 9mm Taurus, Taurus .357 and Colt Pocket Lightning are fairly well used, as is my selection of rifles, in particular the Kentucky Musket.

Parliamentary System.

We have 3 levels of Government.

Shire/City/County Local Government. Having been a Town Councillor for nearly 8 years and a Deputy Town Mayor I think I know how that works, quite well actually. The usual Greenie Councillor, 3 or 4 farmers and a couple of local businessmen on the 9 member Council. All voted in by over 85% of the voting age population.

State Government. New South Wales, my State has an upper and lower house of Parliamentarians. All voted in. Two major political parties. Labour (the workers’ party) and Liberal (the white collar/business end of town)

Federal Government the same again.

EVERY person of age HAS to vote. So no real evidence of Tammany Hall style politics or ward heeling etc.

OK. So we have the odd venal politician, the odd dud one too, and the useless ones also. But on the whole I really can’t complain about rampant corruption, malfeasance on a grand scale or bribery etc.

I’m happy with my lot on the whole.
