| [Tweak Test] Slower Browsing
Okay, I've used DrTCP to tweak my TCP settings several times on several computers now, for a couple years... and I've had pretty great results! My concern right NOW is the fact that, as of my last two tweak tests on this machine, my browsing speed (not my regular download speed-- that's probably been a fair bit better than it would've been without the tweaks) has been quite a bit slower than on one of my untweaked machines. Essentially, navigating to webpages takes a number of seconds longer than it has previously. Sometimes, even trying to load Google takes ten seconds (just getting the placeholder for the Google logo, not even loading it), and just before I decided to check out whether the tweak tool here, YouTube took probably 30 seconds to even change the name in the title bar to YouTube. Now, YouTube kept having trouble for a few minutes, so maybe that isn't a permanent issue (could just be slow today). But it's seemed like ALL websites are taking much more time from when I click a link or enter a URL to it actually starting to load the page's data, whereas on another two machines, things load almost immediately. Heck, even my wussy little eeePC has speedier browsing! It's beginning to grate on my nerves.
So, here are my stats: 1. Tweak test: »/tweakr/block:···terpppoe (last time I tried it, a month or so ago, the tweak tool reported that I should change the RWIN despite it previously being okayed by the tweak test, but since that change it has said I'm correctly in range)
2. Speed test: »/speedtests/72895410/2952 (roughly normal)
3. Line quality test: »/linequality/7···/2529361 (should be good-quality; I've had my ISP check it before, when I was having unrelated issues)
4/5/6. I have DSL from AT&T, and the modem is the Slipstream 4100B that they gave us. It has forced PPPoE on the modem itself (hence why I told the tweak test PPPoE router).
7. Running Windows XP Pro on this machine, currently have one eeePC laptop running XP Home and one Mac running OSX 10.3 (I believe? OSX, anyway) that don't seem to exhibit the problems. I had another laptop with XP Pro that WAS tweaked and didn't have troubles like this, but, err... well, it made friends with both some milk and some tea at different times, let's say.
8. Advertised speed is 1.5 Mbps down, 384 Kbps up, which is... very roughly what we're getting. According to the speed test, could be a bit better (from this machine, anyway), but it's within range.
9. Not using ICS or a VPN.
10. We do use a router, an Airport Extreme from Apple. Hasn't given me any problems in the past, and since other machines report no problems, I doubt the router is interfering. This issue has only appeared since my last two changes in DrTCP, and we've had DSL and the router for about two years. Before those changes, this PC wasn't having any internet trouble.
11. We are extremely close to the CO here.
Before you ask, no, I'm malware-free. I'm pretty obsessive about keeping track of that, and nothing happens on my machine without my knowledge. The sites visited on all computers are also fairly similar, primarily on US servers, etc. I really think it's the TCP settings I tweaked on this machine, since nothing else has really changed. I have yet to tweak my other XP machine, and I definitely won't if browsing continues to be slow like this, since its hard drive is too small for regular downloading anyway. I've power-cycled my modem and router once or twice since this started happening, didn't really do anything. Haven't really changed any modem or router settings in the last year, and it's only the one PC, so I doubt they're interfering. So, can anyone tell me a better number to try for my RWIN? Or will that fix the problem at all? Help! | | Irish Shark Play Like A Champion Today Premium,MVM join:2000-07-29 Las Vegas, NV | • What you posted does not look like a tweaking issue.
• The RWIN is in range and the speed test is right on.

1 edit | said by Irish Shark :• What RWIN is on the other boxes? On the eeePC, it seems it has defaulted to 17424, which the tweak test says is in range. On the Mac, it has defaulted to 65535, which the tweak tool indicates is too high. I can't necessarily confirm that the Mac is navigating more quickly, since I don't use it myself on a daily basis, but my mom has indicated that she's seen no troubles... so maybe it isn't the RWIN. Uhh, one thing I realized I didn't mention is that those two machines are connected wirelessly. The machine with the trouble is connected by a wired connection-- but it's to the same router that the others connect to, not the modem directly. I doubt that's important, but I'm just throwing it out there.
If it isn't a tweaking issue, what is it likely to be? I know it's not the browser, since all three are using the same browser, with the same configuration. One thing I did recall is that my hosts file on this computer (not the others, since one is incompatible and the other has too little hard drive space) includes the blocked entries from Spybot: Search & Destroy's list. My other XP laptop, when it was running, had it as well... but I don't remember having these problems with it, as I said. Is that likely to be the problem? I'm none too keen on removing those entries... But it's frustrating that navigating from page to page is taking so much more time. I really can't think of what the problem could be, and since it started about the same time I tweaked things, I thought maybe... bah. Help? I can provide any extra information you need, and give anything you want a try.
EDIT: Someone in a thread below me mentioned that setting the RWIN higher than the value they settled on DID cause slower browsing, evidently. The Mac's status doesn't make any sense if that's a problem, but as I said, I'm not the one using the Mac. | | Irish Shark Play Like A Champion Today Premium,MVM join:2000-07-29 Las Vegas, NV
| • The 17424 RWIN is close to the low end of one of the Windows default RWINs. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
• Your RWIN, as I said above, is pretty much in the right range. Maybe plug in the lower RWIN and see what it does?
• As for the recommended RWIN range that The Doctor suggests, it should be taken with a grain of salt.
• The chap in that thread who reduced the RWIN, did not really move it enough to make any real world results. It's is his box and if he does not like the suggestion, he can change it if he want to.
• Try dumping the cache, run some virus tools, and see what that does. Also, try disabling your AV and firewall. Have you added any new SW or HW recently? -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Have you added any new SW or HW recently? Haha, I'm way ahead of you on most of this. Cache has been cleared, but it's the same across both browsers I regularly use. I've run virus/spyware scans within the last week (though I have no reason to believe they would find anything), and as I said, no malware. The only hardware I've changed in the last year was my video card, which I doubt is related, and I don't think the problem started appearing then. No new software was installed around the time the problem started appearing, and I've only installed one or two things anyway. None of them run in the background on my machine, and I've disabled any services they installed. As for disabling AV and firewall... I already have my firewall disabled right now (and that would've been one of the first things I'd try), and the only anti-anything program I've had running at startup in the last year is Spybot's Teatimer, which shouldn't interfere with anything. Exiting Spybot doesn't seem to improve the problem (no surprise there)... I will try the tiny RWIN the next time I restart my computer, and see if that does anything to help.
said by Irish Shark :In your LQT, you have high latency at your hop. This should be affecting all your boxes. That's interesting... my ping seems to have been relatively good (from my point of view) in games, so I hadn't thought to study anything related to my latency. What might I do to improve this? Or is there anything I can do? | | Irish Shark Play Like A Champion Today Premium,MVM join:2000-07-29 Las Vegas, NV
