Re: [Tweak Test] Slower Browsing

• What RWIN is on the other boxes?
On the eeePC, it seems it has defaulted to 17424, which the tweak test says is in range. On the Mac, it has defaulted to 65535, which the tweak tool indicates is too high. I can't necessarily confirm that the Mac is navigating more quickly, since I don't use it myself on a daily basis, but my mom has indicated that she's seen no troubles... so maybe it isn't the RWIN. Uhh, one thing I realized I didn't mention is that those two machines are connected wirelessly. The machine with the trouble is connected by a wired connection-- but it's to the same router that the others connect to, not the modem directly. I doubt that's important, but I'm just throwing it out there.

If it isn't a tweaking issue, what is it likely to be? I know it's not the browser, since all three are using the same browser, with the same configuration. One thing I did recall is that my hosts file on this computer (not the others, since one is incompatible and the other has too little hard drive space) includes the blocked entries from Spybot: Search & Destroy's list. My other XP laptop, when it was running, had it as well... but I don't remember having these problems with it, as I said. Is that likely to be the problem? I'm none too keen on removing those entries... But it's frustrating that navigating from page to page is taking so much more time. I really can't think of what the problem could be, and since it started about the same time I tweaked things, I thought maybe... bah. Help? I can provide any extra information you need, and give anything you want a try.

EDIT: Someone in a thread below me mentioned that setting the RWIN higher than the value they settled on DID cause slower browsing, evidently. The Mac's status doesn't make any sense if that's a problem, but as I said, I'm not the one using the Mac.

• The 17424 RWIN is close to the low end of one of the Windows default RWINs. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

• Your RWIN, as I said above, is pretty much in the right range. Maybe plug in the lower RWIN and see what it does?

• As for the recommended RWIN range that The Doctor suggests, it should be taken with a grain of salt.

• The chap in that thread who reduced the RWIN, did not really move it enough to make any real world results. It's is his box and if he does not like the suggestion, he can change it if he want to.

• Try dumping the cache, run some virus tools, and see what that does. Also, try disabling your AV and firewall. Have you added any new SW or HW recently?

In your LQT, you have high latency at your hop. This should be affecting all your boxes.

Haha, I'm way ahead of you on most of this. Cache has been cleared, but it's the same across both browsers I regularly use. I've run virus/spyware scans within the last week (though I have no reason to believe they would find anything), and as I said, no malware. The only hardware I've changed in the last year was my video card, which I doubt is related, and I don't think the problem started appearing then. No new software was installed around the time the problem started appearing, and I've only installed one or two things anyway. None of them run in the background on my machine, and I've disabled any services they installed. As for disabling AV and firewall... I already have my firewall disabled right now (and that would've been one of the first things I'd try), and the only anti-anything program I've had running at startup in the last year is Spybot's Teatimer, which shouldn't interfere with anything. Exiting Spybot doesn't seem to improve the problem (no surprise there)... I will try the tiny RWIN the next time I restart my computer, and see if that does anything to help.

That's interesting... my ping seems to have been relatively good (from my point of view) in games, so I hadn't thought to study anything related to my latency. What might I do to improve this? Or is there anything I can do?
