Fax ?

Actually I have a question... Does anyone KNOW if the MJ wil work as a dedicated fax line???? That would be my reason for purchasing it.
Thanks!

Re: Magicjack Review or Why I Love This Cute Little Box

Geri....

I don't know if anyones KNOWS if MagicJack will work as a fax line, but I know it didn't work for me.

I also know that the MJ FAQ doesn't claim to support faxing.

I also bought MJ as a fax line. I wound up uninstalling the software and throwing the gizmo in a drawer. Other posters have had better luck but it didn't work for me. That after having good luck with the previous VoIP line I had, and great luck with a VoIP fax line at work.

FWIW.

VoIP as a fax isn't reliable so its a hit and miss thing. If you want to send and receive fax through your computer and internet then get an online fax service. There are dozens to choose from just google for it and pick what suits your needs.

If you just need to receive a fax then Onesuite.com $1 a month unlimited incoming fax is worth to look at. If you need to send out one too then they also have a $2.95/month in/out service.

Re: Fax ?

I have to disagree with your statement that VoIP isn't reliable for faxing.

As I stated above, VoIP is the only phone service we have at my office and we never have any trouble faxing.

Before I switched to FiOS I also had a cable VoIP line at home and, again, never had any trouble faxing.

Which is why I expected MJ to be acceptable as a fax line, which it wasn't. I've thrown my dongle in a drawer, done a manual un-install of the MJ software, and I consider the thirty bux I spent a failed experiment. FWIW.

As dbmaven pointed out, this is a topic that has been discussed numerous and I mean numerous times in the past. I'll try to summarize the main points quickly and then you can search for a more detailed answer.

1. The FAX protocol is an older protocol that DEMANDS: No lost/missing data, no data can arrive at the receiving fax machine out of order, no data can arrive late.
2. VOIP is a newer protocol that allows for missing data, ignores data that arrives late, and is very forgiving in terms of data transmission times.

Most of the time, VOIP's allowance of missing/lost/late data will result in a FAX failure. Sometimes, if you set your FAX machines to slow setting or if your internet connection is fast and your connection to the internet backbone is good, FAXing will work.

In general however, if you understand how the two protocols are designed to work (FAX vs. SIP), you'll clearly understand that FAXing over VOIP simply is problematic for many people much of the time.

Re: Fax ?

Believe me...I understand the theory. But I stand by my statements above.

With Optimum Online VoIP, I NEVER had a problem faxing at full speed at home, and still don't have any problem doing so at work.

Re: Fax ?

Optimum Voice isn't truly VoIP - nor are any of the other 'cable operator digital phone services'.

Faxing with any "3rd Party" VoIP - and that includes MJ - is truly a hit or miss proposition.

I can FAX reliably (I've never had a failure) with my MJ and HP All-in-one, but not with VOIPo. Some people can't fax at all with MJ.

Jefe, I too have an Optimum Voice line, which I do use for faxing. But as dbmaven said, OV is not true Voip. OV (like the phone services from Comcast, Cox, etc) does not travel over the naked internet. That's one reason they can charge much more.

Re: Fax ?

dbmaven & PX Eliezer....your points being valid, I would still advise the OP to not count on MJ being satisfactory as a dedicated fax line.

@cox.net

It is just like in vonage. As long as the carrier (MJ or Vonage) don't support T.38 protocol for fax over IP, the fax will be unreliable. So, it will work for some and not work for some. Fax calls have high dependency on timing of packets etc and VOIP calls can't guarantee this since RTP audio is over UDP. So, large faxes usually fail over VOIP calls (non T.38 support). T.38 protocol adds support for redundancy and timing of fax packets etc but very few service providers support Fax over IP (T.38 protocol).

I've tried to be as non technical as possible so it is easier to understand.
