Not being able to get to Microsoft's website is considered a problem? Bonus more like...

Hi slm_satish, Funny I had just been researching something for someone else on BSNL (first time) on a broadband forum there and saw a thread that might interest you: »broadbandforum.in/bsnl-broadband···oadband/

It appears that there have been many users who experience the same issue, and for some time. Such as yourself, it surrounds getting to some high value sites, such as microsoft, yahoo, google, etc, and not others. As TearAbite questioned, if you were not able to get to Microsoft and also not getting to anti-virus sites like Symantec, that would be a symptom of a virus. This is consistent with that and other threads on that forum too.

Some users reported that changing their DNS to either OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) or 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.2 helped them, and others said that didn't help. Others found relief through finding what their correct MTU settings should be, and still others found doing both didn't help.

While this does not tell me what your specific issue is, reading through the trouble shooting steps some provided did give some insight that even though DNS or MTU or both might be at play for any individual (and confirming first there is not virus), that there seems to also be some network congesting issues getting from BSNL out to these sites that is intermittent. On multiple users' inquiry, BSNL tech support did not provide insight to this.

While there was at least one other person I read who could get to sites on another wireless device and not their desktop, consistent settings between their 2 devices did not resolve it. Without a tracert test at the same time from both, it's unknown if the differences could be explained simply by timing. (The 'tracert' is a test from your system that traces the route from your connection out to a particular site. This reports the results of each hop along the route giving insight to any issues there.) Even so, making sure your networking settings are consistent between your 2 devices is the first troubleshooting step you should take regardless. It may solve your issue.

The very first things you should do is make sure your PC is up to date. Apply all the patches and get the latest versions of the software you use including your browsers, office software, and don't forget other add ins such as adobe pdf, flash (uninstall old version first), etc. Make sure your Anti-virus is up to date too. Doing all steps is a security essential no matter what your issue is and you should not be browsing the net without this being done first.

Once you have done that, I suggest changing your DNS settings in your PC to that of the same as your Ipod. Control Panel ->Network Connections ->Right click and select Properties ->Double click on 'Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)' ->Select 'Use the following DNS...' ->Enter in new DNS addresses* ->Reboot

*If the networking in your IPod is setup to dynamically obtain networking settings from your router, including DNS, use the DNS address you entered in your router/modem (most likely the one provided from BSNL) in your PC. This is assuming your IPod is really connecting to your wireless network. Test your connectivity on the 2, both to sites that you can and cannot access, on both at the same time. If no difference you could try the DNS addresses I posted above... making sure you reboot before testing again. If no difference, enter in what you had originally or you could keep alternate DNS if you wish.

Not having the correct MTU could be your issue too, and setting this properly should be done not matter if there is network congestion within or through the BSNL network or not since both will affect you. The default setting in your XP PC and router is 1500, although DSL/PPOE is best set at 1492 or below. (Your ISP may have already set this in your router or not.) Other users on BSNL reported needing to go below 1492 per their test results.

Once you have setup your OS and tested DNS, you can further find what MTU you should be at by using this test:
»/tweaks

Once you run the test, bookmark/copy the URL of the test results page which is your results. You can get help from users in the tweak forum here at »Broadband Tweaks. Provide the URL of your results, and your speed results from: »broadbandforum.in/speedtest/ stating your ISP and country of origin, along with a link to this thread too. I would refer you back to this thread but I honestly don't know if broadband in India differs in technology than US in these regards (other than being lower bandwidth.) It's possible someone there does.

I hope you find resolution in something above. We're here to help and not to chase you off, but I might suggest you ask other users at »broadbandforum.in/bsnl-broadband/ for further assistance past that (bring your test results) since this is leaning on being a local issue in your ISP and a greater amount of people might be there with more knowledge that is specific to your setup. Either way, Welcome to BroadBandReports.

a long shot, but quick to check. open your HOSTS file to see if those sites are listed to be blocked.

i checked the HOSTS file and it displays
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Thanks for the update. DNS, as with RockyBB See Profile's suggestion, was worth a shot anyway.

Your results on tweaking could use some help, even though your ISP congestions is still at odds. Check the thread there as they need more info. Just as FYI - The 1460 MTU number (rather than 1492) the tweaker results suggested is right on with other DSL users on the BSNL forum had reported too as being their sweet spot from using their own mtu tests/tools.

Hope tweaking you up provides some relief.
