I think I've seen them on EVERY brand, it's just how the layout of the board sets the interface for the hard drive. If they slide in, they are standard, but if the leads are below the drive, it needs this connector to make it work. They use them on the IDE drives too. It's not a Dell, HP, specific thing.

It beats trying to fiddle with a cable in a small confined space. The drive just pops in.

I wonder if the Laptop drives that can be bought @ the store(BB, Frys, Etc.,) come with this adapter or if you have to call the Laptop Manufaturer.

The adapter itself does seem like a pretty standard item that looks like it could come with the drive.
