AT&T to discontinue Usenet service

For those who are using Usenet: this has been posted yesterday in all newsgroups:

================
From: news-support@sbcglobal.net
Please note that on or around July 15, 2009, AT&T will no longer be offering access to the Usenet netnews service. If you wish to continue reading Usenet newsgroups, access is available through third-party vendors.

Posted only internally to AT&T Usenet Servers.

I called ATT to complain about the dropping of Usenet and their response was: "Check our literature. We never promised Usenet so if we take it away you have no grounds for a complaint." In other words, if you don't like our service, we don't give a damn.

They are lying. First of all, throughout the years, AT&T have absorbed quite a few of other ISP's, for example Ameritech, SBC, @Home.... Would need to research all of them.

Second:
»web.archive.org/web/200006192254···faq.html
"Does the AT&T@Home service include chat and newsgroup options?
AT&T@Home offers access to all of your favorite chat rooms and newsgroups on the Web"

Third, they were offering usenet service for many years on their servers. The settings were described on their website, they included authentication, and were not available to non-subscribers - therefore, they were part of the paid service. The claim "it was free service" is very familiar one in class action cases, and is very easily dismissed.

Yeah, it's a shame.

I've had newsgroups via my ISP's for over 15 years. I refuse to pay (only a handful of groups I visit daily, never binaries), so I have been looking into free alternatives.

I wish Google would put up some NNTP servers.
