I've had newsgroups via my ISP's for over 15 years. I refuse to pay (only a handful of groups I visit daily, never binaries), so I have been looking into free alternatives.

Third, they were offering usenet service for many years on their servers. The settings were described on their website, they included authentication, and were not available to non-subscribers - therefore, they were part of the paid service.
