Rogers has been closing down some of their video-rental outlets too.
Makes a bit of sense, eh? Deliver movies via VOD - nobody drives, no media handling logistics, no stores, no staff.
Just a bunch of computers responding to peeps pressing of buttons on their needle^H^H^H^H^H^H^H remote control. (I'm allowed to say that, I choose to own no TV).

New figures show service is among fastest growing segments of Canadian broadcast industry
Grant Robertson TORONTO Globe and Mail Update, Tuesday, Jun. 09, 2009 01:47PM EDT
It started out as a money loser, but in only a short period of time video-on-demand has become one of the biggest cash generators the cable and television industry has seen in years.
New figures collected from the federal broadcast regulator show video-on-demand (VOD), which offers catalogues of movies and TV programs to digital cable subscribers at the push of a button, is among the fastest growing segments of the broadcast industry.

Funny how Bell must have the infrastructure/bandwidth to handle digital video, but can't keep up 100kB/s @ 7/24 for the DSL they either retail or wholesale (less than 15% of the "up-to" speed they themselves advertise).
Gotta feed those suckling, parasitic shareholders somehow. |

Doesn't surprise me. Overpriced, poor selection, too limited. Typical BellEr offering. -- "No matter where you go, there you are." - Buckaroo Banzai |

| said by Angelo_ :iptv is coming i think :P They've been promising IPTV for about 5 years now. First there was VDSL which is a complete flop, it's old tech and doesn't have nearly enough bandwidth or promised features. Then there is actual IPTV which they still have yet to roll out, still in public trials in very limited areas and with the threat of them pulling upgrades, it may never be widely rolled out. |

Bell video store has gone the way of Bell Home Monitoring & Security.
The road to Bell is paved with greedily intentions. |

| reply to well sir yippee As I said in another post that's similar, This is just a tactic to mess with the CRTC into letting them have whatever they want.
And let's face this fact that Bell can offer iptv for a lot cheaper than they're saying. I can watch tvuplayer, an under 1mbit streaming tv service (I'm satisfied) for free. 1 or 2mbit is plenty for a stream, and if there's a second or 2 lag from channel to channel, I'm OK with that.
Again, thanks Bell for trying to influence the CRTC's rulling. Jackass. |
