Avery Island and other things to do

Has anyone ever gone down there for the tabasco tour ? My Mom and one of her friends are coming into town for 5 days soon and I am trying to find some things to entertain them. Right now I am probably going to take them to »www.stfrancisville.net/ to ST Francisville and the Myrtles Plantation »www.myrtlesplantation.com/ one day. Then I was thinking about visiting »www.tabasco.com/tabasco_ ··· cfm#targ Avery Island. I haven't done either of these things yet. The people I have talked to here about doing it all say something about they did it when they were a child and sort of remember it being cool. Just wondering if anyone has done either recently and can offer some input. Also if you have any other suggestions on what to do in the area I would appreciate it. I am also thinking of taking them to the aquarium in New Orleans and then take them around Jackson Square. I will try to get a visit into Cafe Du Monde while there.

Re: Avery Island

We went to Rosedown Plantation last year and found it interesting. »www.crt.state.la.us/park ··· own.aspx

We spent several days in the Natchez area and did a day trip down to Rosedown.

Cool. That looks pretty interesting. I know her friend is wanting to visit a few plantations. My Mom came down here about 3-4 years ago and we visited Oak Alley and Laura plantation. I liked both of those, but was wanting a few different ones this time since my Mom and I have already seen them.

Re: Avery Island and other things to do

Ok so I'm a little late. I've done the tabasco tour just last year when I moved here.

It was easy, cheap, and didn't take much time.
They do have a nice little gift store on site.

Thanks for the reply.
My Mom came in last week. We went Friday to Avery Island. We did the Tabasco tour which is free and pretty neat. Then after that we did the drive around the island. I think it is called the jungle tour or something like that. It was, I believe, $6 a person. I enjoyed that. There are several hundred egrets in bird city nesting. That was pretty cool. I am originally from Eastern tip of TN close to VA and NC and that is where my Mom lives. It was fun to compare and contrast the land and vegetation of the two different regions. Just seeing all the different vegetation and gardens was well worth the trip. There were a lot of gators running around to see also.

Re: Avery Island

We ended going to Rosedown. I was going back and forth between going to the Myrtles »www.myrtlesplantation.com/ because of the ghost stories and Rosedown on the way to ST Francisville. At the last moment I chose Rosedown. That was a very well done tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and the house had some interesting objects and history. Thanks for the suggestion. After seeing Rosedown we drove around St Francisville. We didn't have a lot of time to explore that day, but one day when I have some free time I plan on going back and checking out the area.

During her stay we also went to the »appl027.lsu.edu/rlm/rura ··· sf/index rural life museum. If any of you are ever in Baton Rouge you should check it out. We also went to the old Governor’s mansion »www.oldgovernorsmansion.org/ and the old State Capitol building »www.nps.gov/history/NR/t ··· ocap.htm I had never been to either one of them before and enjoyed them both.
Yesterday I took her to New Orleans. We parked near Harrah's and went into the Casino. She had never been in one before and that is a nice small Casino to see. After that we walked up into the lobby of the »www.starwoodhotels.com/w ··· yID=1763 so I could show her a nice view of the river and the cathedral. Then we walked down to cafe du monde for a cafe au lait and beignets. After that we walked around the shops in that area and through the French Market. Then we walked back up to Jackson Square and St Louis Cathedral »www.stlouiscathedral.org/ .
I believe she had fun. I tried to keep her busy while here and we ate at a lot of good restaurants, mostly cajun and seafood. It was 95-100 degrees and humid the whole time she was here. The was no rain or afternoon showers at all. She isn't used to the heat, but I don't believe she was totally miserable during her stay. It could have been worse.

Damn I miss those every other weekend trips made to MS & LA during the early '80's. I need somebody to adopt me for a wee while to remember all those fantastic times including those when I couldn't get past Jackson and the hot chicks, Yazoo city became my reference point when people said.."I just love your accent, where are you from" ..."MS/LA" [Depending on my mood at the time]. For those that stated which part of England or Europe are you from, instead of "Where are you from" the answer was always, Yazoo city, MS (Dated a hot lady from there once...)......LOL

Love the deep South. a lot of character, there, to be sure both in culture [A few places still have culture], history and great landscapes/old building and fauna.

As an aside, The most thrilling place for me is LA, I just love the accent and I promise not to ask where it came from.

Damn, wish I'd known you were headed to New Orleans!

Glad the trip worked out well. I enjoyed Avery Island and my wife keeps telling me she wants to go. I'll have to take her soon.

I would definitely suggest taking her to Avery Island for that garden drive. I have been thinking that it would be one of those neat places to take someone for a long slow paced date. There is lots of time to talk and the scenery is gorgeous.
