| I wasn't eligible for an upgrade... Last year when I wanted the 3G so I paid retail price. It is what it is, you are either within the time or not. I think that argument is a bit weak. It is the price you pay for wanting new toys earlier than you are "allowed" to get them at the cheaper price. | |

Lots of whining and crying over something they knew full well going in. About the only complaint that I will accept is the ETF vs. Upgrade Fee complaint.
It's $150 ETF to get out of the contract early...
Or it's $200 to upgrade within the contract
That seems a little wacky to me? Unless they are willing to deny ETF'ers a discount when they try to sign up again? But I doubt they're going to do that considering the money is in the monthly fees.

Get a life folks and read your contracts - it is not just for the iPhone but any carrier subsidized handset, if you want to upgrade early you have to pay full price.
How do these people think the carrier is subsidizing their handset - by locking them in a contract so that it can recoup some of its investment of subsidizing your phone. If you want to upgrade early then the carrier needs to recoup that subsidy it gave you - hence the upgrade fee or ETF. This is true whether you have an iPhone or a Razr or any phone for that matter.
All I can tell these people is that I hope they read their contract the next time.

No subsidy since they're still under a subsidy contract. That's what I thought. I really can't understand that complaint, although Apple and AT&T did let people do it once and now people think it is the norm.

I'll give you that.
But I'm not sure which fool is the fool in this pairing -- the consumer for not reading and believing the terms or AT&T for proposing and enforcing such ridiculousness.

Everyone in the cell phone world knows full well how these contract subsidies work, especially techno-nerds like the fools who stand in line outside stores overnight to buy stuff you could easily get the next day in 10 minutes. That many of these same people are bawling about being stuck in a two year contract and are not allowed to get the newest shiny bauble from Cupertino for free is laughable.

This is typical of cell phone companies especially Verizon.
I think if everyone were explained to, in plain English, that you had to pay an additional $300 (or more) to get a phone without a contract, then more people might be understanding. That being said, you will always have that group of people who want new phones every 6 months but don't want to pay for it. I have a co-worker who loves to switch phones every 6 months and HATES contracts but also HATES paying the higher price.
