Re: Why? Agreed completely. I've had the same problems with those worthless SA boxes (went through 3 here). Why on earth would I want to buy them when each time they break I can call Comcast and they come and replace it? -- Blagojevich / Madoff 2012! |

| Exactly! You buy something like a Tivo S3, what's that, 300? Do that with a cable box from Comcast and 6 months later, it craps for some reason, baring a good waranty, you're out that money and have to do it all over again. Naw...
Now, I might go for Tivo or something with a cable card install, but I'd have to compare prices first.
In the end, I pay for the box and DVR service every month and if anything craps out, Comcast is on the hook to fix it.
Just like with my modems, all I'd have to do is call them up and done. None of my money out of pocket.
If we could buy boxes off the shelf or from Comcast, I'd only do it if their boxes were as stable as the Moto 5100 series modems. They've still got some catching up to do in that area, though, so I'd stay renting my box. |

| reply to pnh102 alot of the issues are the fact that the cable boxes are reused so much, and get banged around alot, u honestly think they fix the one u turn in?
What i see hapening is instead of renting, you'll lease the box for x months, and at the end its your, in exchange u'd get a brand new, fresh out the mfg's box unit. or u can at option pay for the box up front |

SLDPremium join:2002-04-17 San Francisco, CA | reply to pnh102 A prime reason we cancelled Comcast TV service was that we kept having issues with the various DVRs they gave us. Sound kept dropping out on recordings. Same problem on each unit we brought home. I would've paid to have a quality unit - would have saved money based on the time wasted driving to the Comcast office and waiting in line. |

NOTHING....
I can bring you 5 boxes, brand new, off the shelf.. each one of them is capable of having the same problem as any banged around used box. Which, by the way, the banged up boxes, I've seen have lasted for years as well.
Its nothing more than a pure hardware and design problem.. some boxes went bad becuase of over heating issues.. some went bad becuase they were just massed produced and some components were not the greatest.. etc. But simply because they were recycled? No.. and you get this impression that they are dribbled like a basketball from the shop to the home. A lot of the damage to the converters are done in the home by the customer. Scratches on the boxes do come at the warehouse handling level, but some scraped paint on the metal housing doesn't make a box malfunction. |

And, if that happens AFTER the warranty, Comcast certainly isn't going to do a thing for the consumer. (For the record, DirecTV and Dish's DVR and boxes do go bad too)

While I agree with you, at first, you say you'd have paid for a quality unit now after the bad experience, however, once that settles in, like many, you'd think it cost too much.. that's a simple human nature thing. But, I agree with you.. I too am willing to pay for quality as well. The problem is, what you're getting now is at a quality price, but the quality isn't there.. THAT is the problem.. and why anyone would want to purchase the box is beyond me.
There IS the option of Tivo.. so far, less users complain about those boxes.. they're $300 or $200 if you want a refurb.. unless you're an OnDemand user, Tivo would be a way to go..
Personally, I'd drop comcast over the monthly price before the DVR.. the DVR is an easy fix. |

 | reply to fiberguy you've never listened to how the box sounds as you put it in the cable box return slot, im sorry a hddvr comes crashing in on top of the outher piled in that thing cant be good. |

I am weary of buying one though... if we move and it doesn't work with a different cable system I'd have wasted my money. Plus they are so crappy anyway I'd not pay more than $10 for one. -- Blagojevich / Madoff 2012! |

I can go on eBay for a cheap used box or go buy a new one, call DirecTV, give them the needed info off the box, insert my access card, and away I go.
Try that with ANY cable company... |

| yea, but u've ovously give these techs and contractors WAY too much credit. The ones i've delt with they were just tossed in a carboard box in the back of the truck, in a big old pilesliding around and stuff. To say the cable company handles these gently is a myth. |

Ebolla join:2005-09-28 Dracut, MA | Your handful of techs dealt with also doesn't mean that every tech just drops them on the floor in a big pile on the floor. Tech's around here have shelves in the truck with netting to hold the boxes in while driving NOT a cardboard box. To say that 1-2 techs doing something means they all do is ALSO a myth. |
