| [WIN7] Outlook express under Windows 7?
I like most of Windows 7, but still prefer Outlook Express over Live for email.
Is it possible to safely run Outlook Express under Windows 7? -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

Personally I use Thunderbird when not using Outlook. |

To the OP, you can download and use Live Mail. Its pretty close to OE and Windows Mail and works as advertised. I just like Thunderbird better.

| reply to pandora OE6 has never been available as a stand-alone download. It was last distributed with IE6.

4 edits | Apparently so. I have e-mails in my Inbox back to 12/06 in Windows Live (nothing in Sent Items) and have Inbox and Sent items in Thunderbird back to 3/07. This 7 install is an upgrade from an fresh install of Vista in 12/06. Thunderbird was installed on Vista so it looks like the Vista e-mails are just what was already there but apparently the Live e-mails are from some storage left behind from Windows Mail. I'm just wondering where the sent items went. -- "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows . . . . " -Bob Dylan |

| reply to pandora Now here's an interesting dilemma...
It appears that Outlook 2002 and 2003 require Outlook Express. I seem to recall that dependency and just confirmed it: »support.microsoft.com/kb/287686/
I also recall that Microsoft claimed Office 2003 will run on Vista although it is not supported.
But now I'm wondering if Office 2007 is going to be the minimum level of Office for Windows 7. I hate Office 2007 and would really want to stay with the older ones! -- "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" -- a corollary of Murphy's Law "A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

I can only imagine, then, that the necessary components must still be there even if Outlook Express isn't, even if only to provide backward compatibility. Is it possible that Microsoft actually did this right? -- "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" -- a corollary of Murphy's Law "A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

| reply to pandora OE IE6 is going like analog tv signal, I run OE6 with Windows 7 and i had no real problems, I would like OE6 looks, minus the Bells and Whistles of IE8 has!! The Security I can live with. I also try integrate OE6 looks and IE8 Security and there was too many problems.
I recieved this email from Mircosoft about OE6 couple weeks ago, this is 2nd time they try too change it,
Dear James. You are receiving this note because you have used Microsoft Office Outlook, Outlook Express, or Entourage to view your Windows Live Hotmail®. Microsoft is changing the way these programs access Hotmail e-mail which will require you to take action.
To continue to receive e-mail from your Hotmail account, please select one of the alternative solutions below before September 1, 2009. After this day, new e-mail can only be delivered to your mail programs through the following alternative solutions.
If you use Microsoft Office Outlook to view Hotmail, you can download free Office Outlook Connector to continue accessing your Windows Live Hotmail within Outlook 2003 or 2007. If you're using Outlook 2002, you will need to change the settings on your program to access your Hotmail. Click here to learn more.
If you use Outlook Express to view Hotmail, you can choose to download free Windows Live Mail (recommended) or change the settings on your program to access your Hotmail within Outlook Express. Click here to learn more about your options.
If you use Entourage to view Hotmail, you can change the settings in your program to view your e-mail. Click here to learn more.
Don't know what you're using to view Hotmail? Have more questions? View the FAQ page or visit the Community Forum.
Why is this happening? Outlook, Outlook Express, and Entourage use a legacy communications method (known as the DAV protocol) to access Hotmail. Because the DAV protocol is not optimally suited for programs to access large inboxes such as Hotmail which now provides users ever-growing storage*, new alternatives have been built. Last year, customers asked us to postpone plans to retire the DAV protocol until more options were available. Now that these options (including the POP3 protocol) are available, we are ready to retire the DAV protocol.
Thank you for using Windows Live Hotmail.
Sincerely, |
