Where do you like to go when you need down time?

I like to go to PA, around Lancaster PA, its quiet and peaceful. But like, what if you lived there -- would it always be peaceful and quiet? If you live in the place where people go to get away from it all, how do you get away? Is it a trap? Is it like Hotel California with Amish people?

The Poconos was always a nice escape. In the winter, you had skiing, in the summer you had a couple ski slopes (like Camelback) that ran summertime activities.

Worst case, if you wanted to get away from home, there was an easy drive to places like DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Honestly, we take the family up north of Harrisburg to my Grandparent's farm. We get to work a bit outdoors, enjoy the sounds of nature, and eat until content. Lots of great home-made ice tea as well. Kids can run around without the worry of them getting on someone elses property, or going out in the street. It really is a lot of fun.

Shoot; it isn't far at all in any direction from Harrisburg to get to farm land. It's practically in my back yard. Just last weekend we took the kids to my buddies farm just off the Grantville Exit from I-81. This is fifteen minutes from my house. Goats, chickens, and a lamb just running away from the relentless children.

I've been there. Very peaceful and serene.
Lake George is also spectacular, the part up near Bolton's Landing.

You reminded me of a robocall telemarketer pushing property at Loon Mountain in NH 20 years ago. I had just moved to Boston and for months these calls would come at all hours of the day and night that started with the sound of loons in the woods at night. "Loooooooooon Mounnnnnnnnnnntaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain! Wouldn't you just love to drift off to sleep with this soothing sound every night?"

The developer and telemarketer got socked with some hefty fines a few years later after just about everyone in Massachusetts and New Hampshire with a telephone complained repeatedly to the PSCs and attorneys general.

This property has been in the family since around 1905 or so, we have some pictures of when the Huge Pine trees werent so Huge! it was also built back when the ' main road ' was the Stage Coach route, that came up just behind the main camp. Our little camp sits on about 3 acres of state parkland.
with lake front privleges(it used to be right on the lake)until the state road came thru in around the '30,s

Lake George is indeed wonderful and, yes, midway on either side. It's such a shame when the only experience folks have is Lake George Village, the definition of a tourist trap.
Love that lake. Hope to get up there this summer...

Local getaways are west to the Blue Ridge or East to the beach...which can be a getaway or tourist hell, depending on when and where you go.

And, of course, the various state and private campgrounds scattered around are a nice, easy weekend respite.

Yup, that's why when I was in Bolton's Landing - the panorama and the beauty of the lake could make me want to move there and never leave, I'm sure in the winter I might have a differing opinion.

People actually GO SOMEWHERE to get away from it all? I usually just go into my bedroom and take a nap

a nice vacation spot
If I ever needed downtime, I'd probably go to this place.

Being retired, everyday is a relaxing place for me.

Took me years of blood, sweat and tears to get it that way. Used to be an overgrown MESS of twisted bramble etc.....

Thanks.

Bear in mind. I shot that through my screened deck so the color and clarity might be a little off.
