| Maidenhead Grid Square Locator lookup and mapping page One if the pieces of data I like to have for each contact I make is the maidenhead grid square associated with the station. There are various places to get the information or try to have it determined for you, but I created my own that I think consolidates much of it into one place.
I'd appreciate it if you could check out at:

and let me know what you think. You can put in any address/location and Google will try to find it (geocode it) and then allow me to determine the grid square based on that. It also supports entering a call sign which pulls the address from QRZ.com and determines the grid square from that address (which is sometimes different then what QRZ has but I keep validating mine as being more accurate). Lastly you can put in a 4 or 6 character grid square and it will map the region it covers.
Can you check it out and let me know if you find anything that isn't working properly or isn't accurate so I can check it out and improve on the page. Any additional feedback is welcome. You can post here or send me a private IM.

Looks like it's improperly parsing my QRZ address.

| Yeah, it needs a little work. K1ZC shows my correct address on QRZ, but it maps me to someplace outside Pittsburgh. Since I live near Ann Arbor, Michigan, you missed it by quite a distance.
If you type my address into the top box instead of my call sign, it does better but still misses me. My actual QTH is about 3-4 miles WNW from the pin icon shown on the Google map. | |

| Thanks guys. The biggest factor for the accuracy is Google's ability to map your address properly. Google Maps site (service) does the geocoding based on what I pass it. For a call sign, I get the address from QRZ and use that.
I asked DrJim for his call sign. Using jacour's call sign, Google doesn't find the location based on the address on QRZ. You can go to Google Maps at »maps.google.com and paste in your address and see that it doesn't find it. Do you find anything that you can enter in Google that finds your home address based on the town in QRZ. It finds it based on the town you have on your profile here on DSLR.
If I enter in your address from QRZ replacing that town with the one on your DSL profile, it seems to map it accurately to a street. The grid though based on that street is different then what you have on QRZ. QRZ shows EN62cd and I get EN82cd which seems accurate if the street shown is yours. What are you seeing?

If I don't get a hit on the address, I start dropping words from the left side of the address until Google returns me something. For your address pulled from QRZ, it's the PO Box value or Apt number or whatever the additional info is after the street address that is throwing Google off.
I don't know of a good way, using your specific address, to logically do a better job of pulling off the right side of your address. I could of course just drop the entire street address and just go with the city/state if I don't get a hit, but I've seen more accurate matches by Google if I start dropping from the left.

| I don't live in Ypsilanti or Ann Arbor but rather a township in between. The post office that handles my mail is in Ypsi and that is what matches the zip code. MapQuest has no problem with Superior Township so I think they check the zip if the city doesn't match, but Google does.
It works in Google if you just put in the street address and zip; if you leave out the name of the city it works fine. It doesn't quite get it right, but at least it points to the correct street. I think all these mapping services key off the same TIGER database so if TIGER is wrong, so are the maps. Same with the USGS Terraserver.
You can see in the photo where the automated maps put the pin (in red) and where I really live (blue arrow). I think the more rural it gets, the less precise it is. A similar image of my house in suburban Chicago was almost dead on with the end of my driveway. For most maidenhead squares, a few hundred feet or error won't make much difference. | |
