Problems never seem to have stopped AT&T before 
On a serious note, it could turn out to be better for everyone. The iPhone is already forcing AT&T to upgrade their network, and even bring their data price down (rumored). Other changes could impact other phone users, in a positive way.

Anyway, not going with AT&T on the iphone, still. They're EDGE-only here and though their network is faster than anyone else's it's still only 70-100 kbps. On the CDMA side we've got 3G from Sprint and VZW... |

| I don't have a problem with concept of being under contract and all that jazz..I don't like it, but I can't complain.
I just want to know if I pay the higher price will my contract still get extended? This what AT&T has done in the past.

This what AT&T has done in the past. if they do, then att does have issues. normally, you should be able to purchase a phone outright and just flip phones. you have not agreed to take a subsidized phone (which is why the contract is there in the first place). honestly, if att did that, i would tell them to shove it.
