drjim : When six is open, it's stunning. An FM radio has just as much of a chance as an SSB radio does. I know people that have worked New York repeaters from here in SoCal.
The last time I had an antenna for six, it was an Antenna Specialists commercial model, something like a 5/8 over 1/2 wave. I couldn't run more than about 30~40 watts because all the electrical stuff in my building went nuts, but I was getting "60 Over" reports from the midwest.
Six really is the "Magic Band"!
--
One man's Magic is another man's Engineering.

accounting : I have been wanting to to get into 6 meters for a while now. It sounds like an interesting band. I would like a mobile rig, as I am driving a lot. Would a mono band FM only rig be ok, or would not having SSB be of a great disadvantage? I was thinking of this one maybe...»www.universal-radio.com/catalog/···025.html

KA3SGM : Unfortunately, my 6M antenna is out of service so it doesn't do me much good, but a heads up to anyone else that wants to check 6 Meters to see if it's open between the Mid-Atlantic and the Gulf Coast.

I just spent the noontime hour watching my local Analog TV stations shut down, and when the local Philadelphia, PA CBS affiliate KYW-TV 3 shut down, I found myself watching KTBS-TV 3 from Shreveport, LA.

An almost perfect picture, with no static or fading at all.

Then KYW-TV turned it's analog transmitter back on 15 minutes later, and started running a looped public service announcement on how to obtain a DTV converter, or get DTV transition questions answered.

Now I don't know if the band is still open or not, but getting a stable VHF-Low(Channel-3) TV signal over a good 1000+ mile hop, probably means the same for 6M as well.

So, if anyone is interested in checking it out for themselves....
--
ROCK TIL' SUNSET
